10 Years ago – June 2012: First up was Pack Monadnock, the 10 mile romp from Wilton to the summit of Pack Monadnock. This would be the 14th time I'd make the trek. I was looking to run under 66 minutes to set a masters (40+) personal best. I finished up in 1:06:37 a new 40+ PR.

I took it easy the following week in anticipation of the tough competition at the 10k championships. I went into the race planning to key off of Joe Shairs and some of the other top masters and see what happened. I stayed in the same place from 5k on and didn't feel great when I hit the 5m mark (in a personal best 27:46) but I gave everything I had. I kicked for all I had, knowing it'd be close to my PR and ended up taking 9th in the masters with a new PR of 34:27.2 which is a scant one second faster than what I ran at the NE championships (James Joyce 10k) last year

Next up was the Mt Washington road race. I wasn’t particularly anxious, just a bit worried about how my calf would hold up. Based on my other races this year I felt I was in sub-1:10 shape and if the weather was good and everything came together I might be able to run as fast as 1:08:30. As we started I didn’t feel very good and I had cotton mouth but I would have been surprised if I felt good. CMS teammate Ross Krause and I alternated leading, following, and running side-by-side. I knew Ross was fit and was aiming for a time around what I wanted so it was good to have someone there to work with. I kept working and was finally able to gap Ross on the very last climb (the “wall”) and crossed the finish line in 26th place with a new 40+ Personal Best of 1:08:19. Needless to say I was very happy with the time. Later I’d find out that I also took 2nd place in the age graded masters (which got me $200) and our CMS masters team took home the gold. I was happily surprised to find that I also scored on the CMS open team that took 2nd place in the National Championships.
