40 years ago (April 1983): I only raced twice during this month with the focus being a qualifying time for NCAA nationals. On the 16th I went to the Umass Invitational (Amherst, MA) and ran a very rare 1,500. It’d be 30 years before I’d run another 1,500. I went out hard (61 seconds for the opening 400 meters) but “felt lousy” slowing to splits of 65, and 67 on my way to a 4:00 or about 4:18 if it had been a mile. Five days later (04/21) I ran a 14:19.8 to place 7th at the B.C. relays. Our squad had a great day in the 10,000 meters with Dave Quintal (30:23), Art Demers (30:28) and Joe Regan (30:37) all qualifying for nationals!
