Looking back - April 1988

35 years ago (April 1988): Only two races during this month but both were big ones.  I was selected to represent Massachusetts in the “Eikden Relay” in New York City.  The relay was cool with teams from all 50 states, along with DC and several countries.  Each state team wore special singlets for the race and the gear was provided by the race sponsor Asics.  This was something of a bone of contention for some runners who had shoe sponsorship.  Because of this some top runners decided to not run.  I caught a lot of shit from one of my “teammates” as I was the weak-link on the team.  I was not welcomed but I’ll never forget how loudly the same teammates cheered me on as I brought home the anchor leg (since the top teams got big money). I also picked up some good individual cash by running the 6th fastest leg time (29:58 for 10k).  My other race that month was the Penn Relays (04/28) 10,000 meters.  It was windy and rainy and 50 degrees as I ran splits of 4:33/4:44/4:40/4:42/4:47/4:46 to run a personal best of 29:20.
