Looking back - May 2008

15 years ago (May 2008): I raced six times during this month mixing it up on the roads, XC and a mountain race.  On 05/03 I visited Ripton VT for the Green Mountain Hill Climb.  On this day, it was nasty out there with temps in the 40s and 20 mph winds.  The point to point nature of the course put the wind in our faces pretty much the entire way. I stayed in the lead pack during the early miles hoping I’d be able to make a move as it got steeper.  I fell off the pack at 3 but regrouped then fell off again at 4.5 (on the toughest part of the climb).  I ended up in 3rd in 39:20, 33 seconds out.  A week later I doubled-up, running “relatively easy” at the Shaker Village XC taking 9th place then the next day I ran the USATF NE 6km championships.  A very weird distance to say the least!  I took 13th in the 40-49 age group in 20:22. The race only lasted a few years, so much for weird distances.  A week later (05/18) I was back at Trav’s trail race.  It was warm and sunny but nice in the woods.  I had a strong finish on the uphill climb and managed a top 10 finish (10th in 16:28).  A week later it was on to Wachusett mountain.  I went out in 15th place and slowly moved up.  Jim Pawlicki flew by at 3 miles and helped drag me away from Tim Van Orden, but Dan Verrington (27:00) and Craig Fram (26:41) buried me in the masters age group.  Two days later I took a shot at a win at the Durgin Memorial 5k in Henniker NH.  I went out with the lead pack and got up to 2nd place by the turn on the rolling out/back course.  I never closed on Jason Porter as he took the win in 16:48 to my 17:03.  I picked up $50 for my effort.
