10 years ago (May 2013): I raced five times this month mixing it up on the trails, mountain, and roads. I started the month with a weeknight trail race in West Newbury. I felt lousy and had some trouble with my left calf which I’d injured off and on for a few years. I did end up in the money ($25) with a 3rd place finish in 18:41. Three days later I went to Middlebury VT for the Sweetest Half. My plan was to run it as a tempo and not race. I felt pretty good just cruising along and increased the tempo after half-way. During the last part of the race there is a long out & back section. AT that point I realized I wasn’t that far out from being top 40+ (which would earn me some cash). I ran the last 2.5 miles hard but only managed a 3rd place in the masters (and 8th place overall) in 1:20:01. Two weeks later (05/18) I ran the Bedford Rotary 12km race. As he’d done previously Nacho Hernando sat on me and buried me in the last half-mile. I still managed a 3rd place finish in 41:59 and picked up $75. Next up was another night race (05/23) in Nashua NH. I picked up my number then warmed-up and went to the start line as normal. At that point, I realized I had warmed-up and hour too early. D’oh! I sat around for a half-hour then did another short warm-up. The race went about as well as expected. I took 4th place in a field of 528 running a 17:16. Two days later it was off to Wachusett mountain for the mainstay of the USATF NE mountain circuit. This year the race (finally) returned to the summit. The downhill part still featured some sketchy trail and I met my goal of not breaking a leg on Balance Rock trail. I took 11th place (and 2nd 40+) in 38:37.
