Greylock: On Greylock you need to adjust as the terrain
changes and you need to have some leg speed. I don’t have either.

A
record field of over 250 lined up and shot out for the 8 mile climb of nearly
2,500'. I found myself just outside of the top ten in the early going. I
gave a big kick at the end to sneak under 60. This had me 1:20 short of
my time from last year The team had a good day with 5 of us in the top 9 and 7
in the top 20. We swept the team categories (open, 40+, and 50+).

Half-way to St Patrick’s Day 10km:
This was nearly an out and back as you go out on Elm street and back on
Chestnut which is just 2 streets over. The outward part had about
100'. The temperature was just about perfect (55-60 during the race). I
completed the first loop in 18:29. Things really thinned out on the
second loop. I started catching people on their first loop as I reached the
"Elm St. hill" around 4 miles. The crowds got very thick.
I ended up running the last 1.2 miles in the vehicle traffic lane on Chestnut
street as the runners & walkers were stretched across the road. I crossed
the finish line in 36:34.5 for 4th place overall.

5km championships: My goal was to get
under 17:50 and I was hoping that if all went well I might even sneak under
17:40. As always, I'd be looking around for my fellow senior runners and keying
off of them.
Nearly 2000 shot off on the downhill start and there
was some bumping and one or two scary moments (little kids starting at the
front then STOPPING in the road). Coming back up the hill was brutal and
I kicked (pictured right) for all I was
worth, even if the time doesn’t represent that. I ended up taking 11th in the
50+ and 7th in the 50-54.

Derryfield XC: I’d
run the course hard only once before (1989) when Pinkerton Coach Mike Clark
invited me to come run with his team who were preparing for a big meet at
Derryfield. It was 70 degrees and humid when we got to Derryfield.
The course was in good shape, just a couple of wet spots that could (mostly) be
avoided. This course is tough! We barely broke 10 minute pace on
the warm-upThe uphill start was tough and I was not feeling great. Jim
Pawlicki gapped me right away and at the half-mile I counted 15 guys in front
of me. I did make up some ground and I can't complain with a top 10
finish and first in the 50+.

USATF NE 10km championships: The weather
was looking great for the USATF NE 10km championships and I was hopeful that I
might have a shot at breaking 36 minutes. The new course at Lone Gull
(Gloucester) looked to be slightly quicker than the old course with 30 less
feet of climb (basically one bump was eliminated). It did not go as I
hoped as I hit the mile in 5:49 which was disappointing. I worked
with Teammates Joe Shairs and Nick Taormina and we hit 5k in 18:19. I had
a good battle with Charlie Bemis (WRT) over the last 1.2 but he had a strong
kick that had him one step ahead of me at the line.
