I’ve run over 100 New England championships in the last 24 years but this weekend marked my first time competing in the track championships. I convinced Steve Vaitones to add the 10,000 to the schedule and a field of nine runners showed up. Looking at the complete meet results shows that having nine entrants is a good turnout for any event.
Conditions were great for running a 10,000 but my confidence was a bit low after a lousy workout on Wednesday. I hooked up with the CMS crew and we went out into the rich neighborhoods of Weston for a 3 mile warm-up. I did another mile with strides on the incredibly nice Regis College track and then lined up.

I settled into last place at the start and went around Dave Quintal before the 200 meter mark, that would be the only person I’d pass in the 25 laps around the oval. I hit the quarter mile right on pace and found myself alone. The lead pack was well ahead and the chase pack of Ben Strain, Joe Shairs, and Jim Pawlicki were already pulling away. They never got 100m ahead of me, so I could always keep them in sight but I also had no one to run with.
The leader caught me before 5 miles and Greg Putnam went by soon after. It seemed to take forever to catch Quintal, who along with Joe’s group seemed to have miscounted laps. Getting lapped and lapping were both times when I felt I was pushing the pace as hard as I could. My splits were fairly even, but just a bit slower than I had hoped for. I ended up taking 7th and missed my masters best by 9 seconds. CMS dominated the event taking second through eighth place. We finished out the day with a LONG warm-down, just under 40 minutes which is what you get when you try to do a loop in an unknown location.

Impressive. Another sub 70 in the cards this weekend?
I hope so!
