1,500 meters - a long time ago

04/16/1983

Between 09-17-1982 and 05-22-1987 I ran 67 races.  The significance of that stretch of time is that I was racing for the University of Lowell (I ran 16 more races on the roads so I wasn’t representing U-Lowell at that time, so really the total is 83).  48 of those races were between 5k and 10k.  I ran 12 races of 2 miles (one was a 3,000) and 6 times I raced the mile.  That leaves only one race which is my shortest race of my entire college career, the lone 1,500 meters or the “metric mile”.  I was preparing for a 5,000 meter race on April 21 at BC.  A tune-up was just the thing I needed.  I had a good track workout on Wednesday (04/13/83) with a mile in 4:36, ¾ in 3:28, 2x ½ in 2:16 & 2:17 and a ¼ in 62.  On the 16th we headed out to Umass Amherst for their Spring invitational.  I did a 2 mile warm-up and warm-down as well.  The race did not go as I would have hoped, maybe I was too aggressive in the early going.  I hit splits of 61/65/67 and 47 for a 4:00 (about the equivalent of a 4:18 mile).  At the time that put me on the top 10 list at U-Lowell.  It would be 30 years before I ran another 1,500.

On an upbeat note, the 5,000 @ BC went really well.  I ran a freshman and school record of 14:18.3.  On that same night our team showed some incredible depth with Dave Quintal (30:23), Art Demers (30:28), and Joe Regan (30:37) having a great run in the 10,000 meters.
