Slow snowshoe racing

The tough snow at Prospect Mountain last weekend got me thinking about the ‘toughest’ snowshoe race I’ve done.  Here are the 10 slowest pace per mile of the 117 snowshoe races I’ve done.  Of course pace alone doesn’t dictate how tough a race is.  There were a couple of Hawley Kiln races (back when it was 7 miles of single-track) that were brutal and I remember a Moody Springs race that was over 9 miles and was downright nasty.

The Constitution Hill race (#2) had very deep snow and I chose to lead, a big mistake as I got buried in the last ½ mile.  The Moody Springs race (#3) was especially hard if you factor in that the first and last mile was on groomed snowmobile trail, so the other 2.5 miles took FOREVER.  Funny, the slowest paced races I won were both at the same pace 9:42.

I LOVE when the snow is deep! Last race I avg'd 12:20 miles. It felt like the entire course was uphill. So fun.
