Looking back January 2014:
Fudgesicle race(01/04/14)
- I wanted to test my glute out this weekend and after avoiding any races on
New Year’s day I was itching to get out there. When I got to the parking
lot at 7:15 it was 3 below zero and the roads were all slick with snow (there
were a few random patches of bare ground).
Mike Quintal showed up and we headed out for a loop as a warm-up. At the start Mike shot out with one other guy. It took me 1/4 mile to get by the one brave (foolish?) person who was running in shorts. At about 1/2 mile I caught up to the leaders. Mike sounded a bit ragged but he looked smooth. I accelerated a bit and he re-upped the pace. Just before the mile mark we dropped the other guy. We passed the mile in 5:58. We hit 2 miles with me one step back in 11:56 (5:58). Mike made another move and I thought he broke free but I closed back on him with 1/2 mile to go but I couldn't shake him. With less than a minute of running to go I threw everything I had into a kick and slightly gapped Mike, my hope would be that he really wasn't all that interested in kicking and would ease up. He didn't, and with 100 to go he flew by. All in all it was a good race with lots of back and forth and he result (18:50 for 3.16) running sub 6's was better than I'd hoped. It certainly was a good start to the new year.

Maudslay state park snowshoe race
(01/05/14) - I ran the Trav’s course and put out flagging for the entire course
except the first and last ½ mile. Since this was technically a
“group run” I didn’t want to be too obvious (I did not have permission to host
a race at Maudslay).
I found myself in 11th place
right away and slowly gained on a few of the guys. I didn’t get past
Melissa Donais until nearly ½ mile, she was flying! I tried to work
the uphill to the mile and hit that in 8:40, wow that hurt. I had
hoped that by inviting 1,000 of my Facebook friends I’d get a couple of people
to run with me, I was wrong. From ½ mile on I was completely alone
out there. Paul LaRosa was the last person I could see and by the
mile I couldn’t see him up ahead. I kept working as hard as I could
and hit 2 miles in 8-flat (16:40). The last mile was tough but oddly
it was my fastest with a 7:55 and a total time of 24:35. I got a bit
over 3 miles on the Garmin and a few of the guys got 3.07 so I’m calling it
close enough to be 5km.
After a quick group picture a bunch
of the gang joined me for another lap of the course. Clearing the
flagging from the course is always the most dreaded part of directing a race
and with a big group it can be the highlight of the day. Thanks
guys!

Fudgesicle
series (01/11/14) - Due to the lack of snow both the WMAC and Granite state
series snowshoe races were cancelled or postponed this weekend. Teammates Dan Verrington and Ken Tripp both
were up for a race so I knew there would be competition. I figured both Dan and Ken were both in very
similar shape so it would not be lonely out there. Ken and I locked in to a great back and forth
fight. He led for the first mile which
was 5:32. Any time I felt the pace
slacken I’d move up on him but he would not let me go by. We hit 2 miles in 11:12 (5:40 split) Soon
after I moved to go around Ken and he said “I’m done, go on ahead”. He wasn’t really done, because I made a
serious effort to drop him and just couldn’t shake him. I hit
3 in 16:57 which was a solid split for that mile (5:45) which runs 15-18
seconds long. I gave all I had left and
turned into the parking lot and across the line in 17:37. That worked out to 5:34 pace! I was very happy with the time and the
effort. Ken seemed pleased as well.

snowshoe (01/18/14) - I got up pretty early and met up with Jim Johnson for a
warm-up on the course. We both used Kahtoolahs and had no trouble with
footing during the 33 minutes it took to cover the 3.7 mile loop. I ran
pretty much alone during the race over the fast packed snow.

Sidehiller
4 mile snowshoe race (01/26/14)- 6 degrees and windy (but sunny) and a record
crowd of 120 for a twice around 2 mile loop of the fairground. The field was solid as many were attempting
to qualify for Nationals. From the
results it looks like CMS will be able to field a competitive team. We put 7 in the top 20, only acidotic had
more (8 in the top 20).
