35 years ago: I raced three times during March of 1988 picking up two wins and a disappointing 2nd place. I started the month topping a field of 30 runners in the Tewksbury 5k (Fudge race?) with a 15:02. A week later (03/13/88) I took second place to Paul Hammond at the Hynes Tavern 5 mile. Back then the Hynes race would draw 700 finishers and kick off the Spring racing scene in Lowell. Two weeks later I ran (and won) my longest race to date, the NEAC 30km in Boylston. It was 50 degrees and very windy as I topped a field of 510 finishers running a 1:39:09. I ran 10km splits of 33:20, 34:20, and 31:29. I wrote in my training log that it was “a pretty easy effort” and wondered how hard a marathon would have been on that day (it’s only another 12k). I’d later learn how hard that final 12k can be.
