Looking back - July 1988

July 1988 (38 years ago):  I raced three times during this month picking up two wins.  I started the month at the USATF NE (then NEAC) 5km championships in Goddard Park (Greenwich RI) on July 17.  I always liked this race which was held on a closed course within the park.  I had pretty good luck at this race.  On this 90 degree humid day I took 2nd place 11 seconds behind Andy Ronan (14:25) in the field of 197 runners.  Three days later I went to another race that was a favorite, the Greater Lowell Road Runners 2-mile series at Cawley Stadium in Lowell.  The competition was always good here and it was the perfect distance for a mid-week workout/race.  I ran 9:11 to pick up the win in negative splits (4:37/4:34), noting that I “felt excellent”.  A week later I “felt awful” but won on a long 5 mile course at the Nashua Boys club topping a field of 250 in 25:46.  The 90 degree temps may have been part of the reason I felt lousy.
