July 1993 (30 years ago): I had a busy July racing five times and picking up four wins (granted some of those were CMS series races which I used as workouts). I kicked-off the month at the Sterling MA version of the CMS series in a rain and lightning storm. It didn’t help with the 90 degree temps and high humidity. I topped the field of 20 in 16:49. A week later (07/14/93) I was back at Sterling for the 5k. Three guys took it out HARD. I caught them after ½ mile and went on to win in 15:45. Four days later (07/18) I hit the trails in Cummington MA for the “Ambulance Chase 10k”. The trails were really nice (good footing = fast) but the markings were a bit lacking. I was in the lead through 5 miles before going off course. I got back on track and passed Matt Cull who went the correct way. I went on to win by 27 seconds in 33:53 (Cull – 34:20). Five days later I took a shot at the course record at the Sapienza 5m in Haverhill MA. John Clopeck and I ran stride for stride through 2 miles before I managed to pull away. I narrowly missed the course record of 24:17 with a 24:18. Clopeck took second place in 24:52 in a field of 387. Five days later (07/28) I closed out the month with another CMS series race. I “felt awful” and ran through to a 9th place in 19-flat.
