Hopkinton winter 5k

I hadn’t raced in 65 days (Chelmsford Alumni XC the day after Thanksgiving) which for me is akin to a lifetime.  A hamstring pull in early December put the kibosh on racing and I was tentative coming back from this as this was the same hamstring I’d completely torn back in April.  I’m trying very hard to listen to what my body is saying.  Trying.  My mileage has been good, and I’ve slowly gotten my training run tempo up.  This week I did a three mile lunch run in a step under 7’s with no repercussions so I felt it would be safe to race a 5k.  I’ve had good luck at the Hopkinton Winter 5k’s over the last few years and the timing was right, so I signed up for another go at the out and back “mostly flat” 5k race.  The part that isn’t flat is about ½ mile leading up to the turn which also happens to be where the road turns to dirt (which in the winter means either mud or ice – or both).

On race morning I did 3 miles at 530 am to loosen up a bit.  My stomach was not feeling great, and I was tired, not the ideal way to start the day.  I felt a little better when I got to Hopkinton and had a decent warm-up checking out the course.  The temperature was right at 32 degrees but there was no wind.  The road was in decent shape and the dirt section was a bit icy but not terrible.  About 100 lined up after being assured that it was chip timed so “don’t crowd the start”.  One little kid shot out like a rocket at the start but was pretty  much done 100 meters in.  I found myself with another guy in third place as we rounded the first turn.  The leader was slowly pulling away.  By the half-mile I was 10 seconds back and alone in second place.  Nothing would change, although at times it seemed like I was closing the gap ultimately, I was ‘first loser’, 18 seconds back.  It was another minute to third place.  I had hoped to run under 630s, so goal met.  I’ll take it as a good starting point.

No ISS sightings this week, but one Starlink satellite.  Felt flat for most of the week and worried that the sinus infection was getting worse.  Bounced back a bit by the end of the week and did my first race since late-November.

Looking back - January 2019

Well, not much going on this month.  I continued to struggle with my ankle injuries and a strained hamstring.  I ended up missing 3 days in the middle of the month due to the ankle flare-up.  I tried to take advantage of the Government shut down and the lack of snow to explore some local gems.  The Lowell & Lawrence Railroad trail in Andover was an interesting mix of old rail trail and local foot paths.  One section had a not fully competed elevated board walk, that was 3 or 4 feet above the ground in spots.

I visited the Independence Greenway in Peadbody/Ipswich on a chilly but clear morning.  I’d run on this trail previously but hadn’t checked out any of it beyond the active quarry (you can’t use the trail on Thursdays at certain times due to blasting).  Very scenic trail!

I checked out the new Garrison trail (Salisbury/Newburyport) on a morning after a very light snow.  The trail is very nice despite being right on Route 95.  The highlight is probably the view as you cross over the Merrimack river.

Looking back - January 2014

I started the month (01/04/14) testing a bothersome glute muscle in a close race with Mike Quintal at the weekly Fudgesicle race in Tewksbury.

    3 Liam Skinner        2/4   47 M4049 LOWELL   MA   19:25  6:15

The next day I hosted a snowshoe race at Maudslay state park (I did this kind of stealthily as I did not have permission so technically it was just a “group run”.  I got a nice turnout but ended up running most of the race entirely alone.  After the race most of the group joined me for another 5k loop to pick up the flagging.

Looking back - January 2009

Looking back - January 2009 (15 years ago)

I only logged 288 miles during this month but raced eight times.  My goal was to do a lot of snowshoe races and the weather cooperated.  I kicked off the year at the Hangover classic, running the JV race (5k) where I took 2nd place on a brutal day.  It was 15 degrees the roads were covered with snow, and the wind was howling at over 30 mph.  Two days later I headed to Tewksbury since it was an “open” weekend (no snowshoe races).  Conditions were good but I ended up alone in 2nd place right from the start.  Jim Johnson took the win in 16:23 and I trotted in 1:37 later.  The next weekend I made the LONG drive to Pittsfield for the Turner trail snowshoe race.  This is a great course with a tough climb and a fast descent.  I hit the top in 2nd but got my doors blown off during the descent and ended up finishing in 5th place 15 seconds behind teammate and top 40+ finisher Tim Van Orden.

A week later I completed my first double-race weekend of the year.  Jim Johnson and I headed west and stayed out there for the weekend.  I felt pretty lousy at both races finishing in 5th place at Greylock Glen and 4th place at the Brave the Blizzard.    The following weekend I doubled again, this time in Readsboro VT and back to Pittsfield.  At Readsboro I took third place just barely holding off long-time WMAC series ace Ken Clark.  On Sunday I had a decent run at the Curly’s record run.  I love the climb at this race and decided near the top that I wanted to see if I could be the “king of the mountain”, I somehow got around Ben Nephew just before the top and sprinted ahead.  Soon after I lost the lead and ended up in finishing in third place 58 seconds behind Ben.

My final race of the month was one I directed at Northfield Mountain.  A decent field of 77 showed up and I was surprised when partway through I recognized Leigh Schmitt who hadn’t run a WMAC race in years.  He buried me on the descent and I ended up in fourth place just over two minutes behind Josh Ferenc.

Week Ending 01-21-24

After a couple of higher than recommended milage weeks I dropped back down closer to what my cap should be (80 miles per week).  This week was unusual in that I got in two long runs (anything over 6 miles in a single run is unusual for me).  Both of the 10 mile runs I did were with Verrington which in and of itself is an oddity these days.  With him moving away later this year, it is good to get in some final quality time :-)  I also got in some miles in Chelmsford and always quality runs in Concord.  The final bonus was some miles XC skiing (Crossblade skis for me).  Great fun!

Looking back - January 2004 (20 years ago)

I was coming back from a hamstring injury during this month and managed 304 miles (just under 10 miles per day) while racing four times.  I started off the year with a small trail race at the Merrimack River.  It was supposed to be a snowshoe race but we didn’t have snow.  The trail was in good enough shape for non-snowshoe running so 20 of us did so.  I ran tentatively, deciding just before the start to run, and placed 7th.  Teammate Richard Bolt took the victory. Two weeks later I headed out to Adams for the Greylock Glen snowshoe race.  I got buried, finishing 7th in 27:29 for the 5k loop.  A week later I headed up to Essex Junction Vermont for the USSSA qualifier.  It was brutally cold and the course was a dead flat loop with a lot of ice.  I ran 44:43 for the 5.8 mile course and placed 8th out of 38 finishers…but I did qualify for nationals.  The next day I went out to Pittsfield and was running in 5th place with about a mile to go when I went off course.  I got back but not before I lost a dozen places.  I made up some of those, rolling into the finish in 13th place.

Looking back - January 1999

Looking back - January 1999 (25 years ago)

I raced five times during this month while logging 447 miles (an average of 14.4 miles per day) despite having issues with my calf and Achilles.  On New Years day I took 2nd place at the Freezer Five.  It was windy and cold on the out/back course which runs near the Sterling airport.  I decided to push on the way out into the wind and Richard Bolt hung right behind me.  He threw in a 4:50 mile from 3 to 4 miles that just buried me.  Rich went on to win by nine seconds, 25:25 to 25:34.  The next day Byrne Decker, Steve Peterson and I headed to Tewksbury for the Fudgesicle race.  Byrne took the win in 16:44 with me one second back and Petey another 16 seconds behind.  The following weekend I went to BU for the indoor track series.  I doubled up in the 3,000 meters and the mile.  Colin Peddie and I traded the lead off every 400 meters during the 3k and he took off in the last 400.  I kept it close losing by less than a second in 8:36.  An hour or so later I finished 5th in the mile in 4:31, with Peddie taking a second win of the day running 4:22.  Two weeks later I ran my final race of the month, the Boston Prep 16 mile in Derry NH.  Conditions were very good with moderate temperatures and a little drizzle and fog.  Dave Beauley and I ran lock stepped for the first 12 miles before I pulled away for a win in a then course record of 1:26:52.  Beauley ran a 1:27 and teammates Dan Verrington (1:31) and Steve Peterson (1:36) both had solid races.

All distances in one year?

Dave La mentioned he is attempting to race at all of the “Standard” distances in one calendar year.  I thought this was a  very interesting concept.  We agreed on what would be considered “standard” although a few of them are hard distances to find nowadays.

1 mile
2 mile
5k
4 mile
8k/5m
10k
15k
10 mile
20k
Half-marathon
25k
30k
Marathon

It looks like I came close to getting all 13 of the “standard” distance in one year on two occasions. One other year I came up 2 short.  Oddly these were all in consecutive years.  I had a couple of other years with 10 of 13.

1989 I got all but 25k.  1990 I missed the 4m and 20km.  1991 I got all but 25km.
