Mt Washington all-time stats updated!

 I’ve updated that stats, records, and lists for the Mt Washington road race.  You may be interested in some of the attachments.  I’ve posted links to Google Document version of them below and on the Mt Washington Records Blog.

A couple of tidbits not in any of the spreadsheets…
The women had their first winner from MA since 1984.  Joe Gray tied Eric Blake and Fred Norris as the oldest winner (age 40).  Joe also broke Bob Hodge’s record of 7 wins with his 8th.

Here is a breakdown of the attachments and anything noteworthy from this year. 
1936 to 2024 mt Washington – lists every result I have (40,796)

Updated to 2024 finisher stats – lists, Total Finishers, # I have, average finishing time (men), average age (men), total women finishers, % women, first woman’s overall place, women’s average time, women’s average age.  Records this year – tied for most women finishing with 473 and oldest average age for women at 45.27

Updated to 2024 single age records – Records for men and women for each age.  Three men set records this year and four women set new single age records.

Updated to 2024 five-year age groups men – lists the all-time top 25 (or more) in each of the five year age groups.  New record this year in the M<20 by Patrick Gandini, this broke the oldest standing AG record (1987).  Not a record but good performances: Joe Gray #3 in the 40-44. Eric Blake #6 in the 45-49. Erik Vandendries #3 in the 55-59 (he owns the top 3 times).  Richard Larsen #2 in the 70-74 (trailing only his own CR).

Updated to 2024 five-year age groups women – lists the all-time top 25 (or more) in each of the five year age groups.  New record in the F50-54 by Laura Manninen (by 3:47).  Not a record but good performances: #3, 4, and 5 in the F20-24 (Schwartz, McConnell, Gaudrault). Fourth fastest ever in the F50-54 by Christin Doneski.

Updated to 2024  state records – lists the all-time best for each state (and country).  New records for Nebraska, Canada, and Finland.

Updated to 2024 prize money winners – lists everyone who won any money, biggest total, most times getting cash, and best average.  Over $250,000 has been won over the years.

Updated to 2024 teams top 25 – lists the top 25 (or more) all-time team times by category.  Records set this year – CSU set a new F60 record and Six03 set a new women’s open record (note – this is the second year that five score instead of 3 for women’s categories up to F50).

Updated to 2024 Fsub130 Msub110 – lists all men under 1:10 and all women under 1:30.  For men you have to be in the top 2% of finishers and women in the 5% to make this list.  Only 264 men and 248 women have ever done this.  Erik Blake moved up to 2nd most with 17, Joe Gray has 8th most at 12.  Kasie Enman and Amber Ferreira are tied for 5th most with 9.

Updated to 2024 top 10 finishes – lists everyone who ever finished in the top 10.  Eric Blake is now tied for first with 18 top 10 finishes.  Joe Gray is tied for 7th.  Amber Ferreira is tied for 1st with 10 and Kasie Enman is tied for 2nd with 9.

Updated to 2024 top five finishes – lists everyone who ever finished in the top 5.  Eric Blake is now first with 17 and Joe Gray is 3rd with 13.
 
Updated to 2024 Streak and most finishes – lists everyone with a consecutive finish streak of 8 or more years (34 people).  Lists everyone with 15 or more finishes (172 people).  Some notes:
Streaks – 7 have 40 or more years in a row!  18 have 40 or more and 24 have 20 or more.
Most finishes – 35 have 30 or more. 55 have 25 or more and 93 have 20 or more.  Dean Rasmussen got into the “300 mile club” this year. Curt Hirsch, Robert Bradlee, Robert Gillis, Michael Gills, and Steve Titcomb all have 40 finishes but need one more to get 300 miles (they ran in the “short years).

The Women’s open, masters, and seniors teams all set records as this was the first year of 5 scoring instead of 3.  Delta Dental swept those three categories.  The Floodwater team took nearly 16 minutes off of the men’s veterans team record.
 
55-59 age group record by Erik Vandendries, breaking his own record from 2021 by 42 seconds. 70-74 age group record by Ricahrd Larsen, 5:33 under the old record.

Oldest men’s field ever (48.8 average), fewest men’s finishers since 2012
Slowest men’s field (1:59:50 average) since 2017 and second slowest ever
The top 10 men averaged 1:08:49 which is the slowest since 1978

Mt Washington sunrise climb (caution some nudity)

 I plotted out a sunrise run up the Mt Washington a few weeks ago with Saturday being the tail-end of my vacation it seemed like the perfect time to do this.  With a 5:40 am sunrise it was going to be an early day.  I put the word out to about a dozen folks and got some interested.  It is kind of an unusual thing (running up/down via the road AND doing it timed out for sunrise on top).  It is also the perfect time to run the road as it doesn't open until 8am and we'd be off the mountain by then.

On Friday I hit the sheets a little after 3pm and was up at 11:55 pm.  Out the door at 12:15 for the long drive to the Auto Road.  The great thing about driving route 16 at that time of night is very little traffic.  I made great time as I gobbled 2 pop-tats and 2 Mountain Dews.  Arrived at the stage office at 2:45am.  The group would be meeting at 3:30am so I had a little time to sit outside in the dark and enjoy seeing the Milky Way and some random meteorites.  It was going to be a perfect day for running up the road with temps at the bottom around 60 and 40s on top.  There was very little wind and clear skies at the start.

A few cars rolled up at 315am and I met up with Ryan Welts, Leslie O'Dell, and Richard Fargo.  I hadn't run with Ryan in a couple of years so it'd be fun to catch up.  Leslie was a CMS teammate but we'd only run together a few times.  Rich and I have history that goes back to trail racing in the late 1980's right up to Mountain racing last year.  It was going to be fun getting to chat with all of them as we got this adventure under way.

At 330am we hit the road and the fun commenced.  We got into a nice groove right away and conversation was light and fun.  By 2 miles Ryan and I had turned off our lights and by 3 all of us were running in the dark.  The stars were blazing and we saw a few more meteorites.  The sliver of the moon was even bright enough to cast shadows.  The miles rolled by and we were very consistent.  I had guessed a 1:45 time to the top and we were clicking off miles right in that range.  Everyone seemed to be having fun and no one was struggling.

We reached treeline (4 mile mark) and the sky was definitely getting brighter.  We were treated to some great views!  The sky got brighter and we continued having fun and the miles zipped by.  We reached the top in 1:45:50, almost to the second our predicted time.

We all did a quick change into extra layers or dry clothes as it was a bit chilly on top.  I got my highest summit nude, before getting on my extra layers.  Then we took pics of the impending sunrise.  There was a beautiful undercast which also meant it'd be a longer until the sun peeked through.  After 20 minutes on top we started the run down.  We were treated to some great views again and the sun finally came up above the clouds.  The run down was also fun, at least until treeline.  It does seem to drag a bit once the views are gone.  We were back down in 1:18:43 for a total running time of 3:04:33 and time with stops of 3:26.  It was great to have 15+ miles done before 7am!

I put in another 5m of flat running to loosen up my legs after driving and that gave me my first 20+ mile day since June of last year.  Not a bad way to end my vacation week.

Mt Washington 20 years ago today

40^th Mt Washington Road Race
Saturday (10:00 am) June 17, 2000 - 891 Finishers

Favorites for the 40^th anniversary of the race looked to be Kenyan runners.  Daniel Kihara, the three-time champion, was scheduled to return as was his sometimes-training partner Joseph Kibor.  Simon Karori was expected to take a run at the masters (40+) record.  He had never raced Mt Washington before, but his credentials included winning the Falmouth Road Race three times.  Mark Donahue, who among his many accomplishments was the 1986 New England Cross Country champion, was tearing up the local racing scene including an overall win at the USATF New England 10K championships the week before Mt Washington.  He was expected to give Karori a chase in the master’s category.  Local favorites included Eric Morse, Craig Fram, and Dave Dunham, who had been tuning up for the race by running up mountains on most weekends during the spring.  At Mt Kearsarge they went 1, 2, and 3 with Fram destroying the master’s record.  At Wachusett Mountain Morse and Dunham went 1, 2, and followed that with a 1, 2 finish at Pack Monadnock.  Women’s favorites included Alice Muriithi, a Kenyan living in Pennsylvania, former champion Jacqueline Gareau, and top local runner Julie Peterson.

Kihara flew in from Kenya earlier in the week and may have been tired from the 17-hour flight.  He ran with Kibor for most of the race and made a decisive move in the last mile to take a 40-second victory in 59:24. Kibor missed an additional $500 time bonus by four seconds, just missing the one-hour mark.  CMS runners dominated the top ten, placing third through sixth and eighth and tenth.  Fergus Cullen in seventh place was the only non-Kenyan and non-CMS runner in the top ten.  Karori defeated Robert Ratcliffe by three minutes to take the master’s victory however; he came up six minutes shy of the course record.  This was only the second time in a decade that less than ten men finished under 1:10. The average finishing time for men hit a high of 1:56:31, nearly seven minutes slower than the past high. 

Alice Muriithi took the lead early on and was never challenged for the ladies’ crown.  Jacqueline Gareau took second and was on pace for the master’s mark, and the $4,000 bonus, through the half but faded in the second half.  Both women finished in the top 25 overall. 

CMS led the charge in the team category with a one hour and 13 minute victory over the WCRC in 5:35:47. The WCRC took the win in the 40+ team finishing 2:49 ahead of CSU and 5 minutes ahead of GMAA.  CSU turned the tables, taking first in the 50+ category. CMS won the women’s team title by 12 minutes over CSU in 4:34:13. CMS also won the 40+ category, their time of 4:44:46 would have been fast enough to rank second among open women’s teams and beat the CSU masters team by nearly 20 minutes.

The race packet called the event the “40^th Run to the Clouds.”  Healthsource, Bridgton Academy, and Citizens Bank sponsored the race.  Number pickup had to be completed prior to 9:00 AM on race day.  New features this year were Shaklee performance drinks at the half, along with Polar water at the aid stations.  A “Rides” area was available in the tent at the base where runners and drivers could meet to arrange rides down from the summit after the race as no formal transportation is provided.  New England Runner sponsored a $4,000 bonus for the first runner to break the 40+ age group record.   USATF membership cards and a Direct Payment license were required for money prizewinners.  The prize purse was $4,850 plus time bonuses.  Medals were presented to the top two in five year age groups, the top ten overall, the first five open teams, the top three WAVA master’s, the top three master teams, the top 50+ team, and the top two Clydesdales and top Filly.  The traditional Crossan cup was awarded to the top NH finisher.

Mt Washington 30 years ago today

30^th Mt Washington Road Race
Saturday (10:00 am) June 16, 1990 - 839 Finishers

Pre-race favorites included seven time winner Bob Hodge, 1988 and 1989 champion Dave Dunham, Derek Froude, and Smartex Tambala.  Froude, a New Zealand resident and member of the 1984 New Zealand Olympic marathon team, was training part of the year in Boulder, Colorado, and had recently run a 28:50 for 10 Kilometers.  Tambala from Malawi, Africa had recently won a half-marathon in Canada.  The field appeared to be wide open on the women’s side as last year’s top two finisher were out. 

The weather was a bit warm in the early stages of the race, with temperatures in the 70s.  It cooled to 54 at the summit and winds were only 2-3 mph.  Runners came from 22 states, D.C., and six countries.  The field had a record 839 finishers.

Derek Froude became the first person to crack the one-hour barrier with his victory in 59:16. He took home $2,000 for the win and record.  Froude ran an even race, passing the halfway mark in 28:28 and slowing to only 30:18 for the second half.  Froude, who has run a 2:11 marathon, established a lead after four miles and extended his lead over the chase group.  Dave Dunham held second from the early going and beat Pike’s Peak ascent winner and Empire State Building run-up winner, Scott Elliot.  Bob Hodge was hampered by a knee and thigh injury but still managed to place tenth. 

Lynn Brown of Durango Colorado bested a record field of 137 women, winning in 1:19:57.  Brown was the 1988 Pike’s Peak ascent champion and had mountain-raced in Europe.  Her splits also showed a steady run as she ran 38:15 and 41:42 for the first and second half of the race.  In New England Runner, Brown called it, “the hardest mountain race I’ve ever run.  Colorado races may go up to 14,000 feet, but there are switchbacks.  They’re mild compared to this.” A record 16.33% of the finishers were women.

Team competition featured the Greater Lowell Road Runners again taking both the men’s and women’s titles.  The ladies topped the Winner’s Circle by ten minutes, 4:39:42 to 4:49:26.  The men ran the third fastest team time with a 5:39:23.  This placed them behind only the 1979 GBTC (5:35:50) and the 1981 BAA (5:31:07). 

New check-in procedures this year required every runner to pick up their own number (numbers were non-transferable) and the entry fee was $15.  The Auto Road would now be closed at the bottom from 9:45 AM until noon.  Autos heading to the summit were now charged $12 per car and $5 per passenger.   Aid stations now provided Monadnock Springs water for the 1,000 runners allowed into the race via a new lottery system.  Consideration was given to top men and women and elite “contenders” along with those who had a consecutive streak of at least six years (beginning with 1983).  Medals were no longer given to the top 50, but to age groups based on previous participation.  The prize purse was $2550 plus time based incentives.

Mt Washington 40 years ago today

20^th Mt Washington Road Race
Sunday (noon) June 15, 1980 - 471 Finishers

Bob Hodge continued his streak with a record fifth consecutive victory.  Durham’s Gary Crossan pressed him in the early going.  The field was again the largest to date with over 500 starters and 471 finishers were recorded.  It was 78 degrees at the base and 35 degrees with wind and drizzle at the finish.  Hodge was just over 28 minutes at the halfway house but was unable to improve on his 1:02:08 course record of the previous year.  At the time he held the four fastest times ever as he led a record 12 runners under 1:10. Hodge was in excellent form as displayed earlier in the year when he set an American Record for 15 Kilometers in Stanford CA.  He ran 44:00.2 to beat Gary Tuttle’s record by 53 seconds. 

Cathy Hodgdon of Franklin NH and a member of the UNH track team took the women’s race in 1:26:50. Liz Cunningham and Leslie Thompson followed close behind as the top three broke 1:30.  Thompson’s time remains (as of 2005) the third fastest for a junior runner (under the age of 20).  Her time would hold up as the record for another 19 years.

Team scoring was not listed however, if the combined times of the top five runners was used, BAA would have edged GBTC 5:50:41 to 5:51:52.  This remains one of the closest team finishes ever, and as one of only four times when two teams broke six hours (1979, 1999, 2005).

Jock Semple directed the race and complete results were printed in New England Running courtesy of Fred Brown Sr., the NEAC Long Distance running chairman.  Fred Ross made a deal with a sports printer to produce numbers for the race.  He borrowed a bumper sticker from Doug Philbrick (the Auto road manager) to get “Mt Washington” logo on the numbers.
