USATF NE 5 mile championships

I didn't decide to run at Carver until Thursday.  I've been coming back from a strained calf muscle and haven't raced since Mt Washington (June 18).  Dan Verrington and I did a track workout on Wednesday (2x1mile @ 5:29) and on Thursday my calf still felt okay so I felt it would be safe to test it out at the five mile.

We (me, Dan, and David Quintal) got to the race site a bit early and drove the course to get a feel for what we were in for.  This is always a good move and definitely helps out mentally when running the race.  The first 1.5 was generally downhill, then it was pretty flat with a "little" bump in the last 1/4 mile that was definitely going to hurt.  I thought it looked a lot quicker than James Joyce but my lack of fitness over the last 6 weeks tempered my goal.  I was aiming to run 5:40's = 28:20 and hopefully score for the team.

A huge group of CMS runners went out for a 3 mile warm-up and I followed that with another mile doing strides.  It was hot and I really did not feel up to doing anything quick but needed to follow the routine.  I hit the line 5 minutes before the start and CMS had all gathered on one side of the line.

I thought the start went out very fast and I tried to run in control.  About 1/2 mile in I passed the top 4 or 5 women who were bunched together.  I focused on Terry McNatt, Mike Platt, and Reno Stirrat who weren't that far in front of me at the mile (5:21) - downhill/tailwind.  We turned off of Main street at 1.5 and I worked my way around Mike and Reno as Terry pulled away.  Next I focused on catching David Q who was a few seconds up at 2 miles (10:59/5:38).  I passed David before three miles and closed on the first place woman.  It was hot out there and NONE of the water-stops had more than 2 people at them.  At one stop I got 2 empty cups of water and another I got a cup that was "hot enough to have a nice cup of tea".  I hit 3 miles in 16:43/5:44 and felt I had a good shot at reaching my goal.  I felt pretty good during the fourth mile and caught a couple of guys and passed the lead woman.  I hit four in 22:35/5:52, my worst mile of the day but one that I felt I ran pretty well.  The final mile was tough, especially the last uphill part.  I pushed as hard as I could (checking my watch 3 times during the last mile) and hit the line in 28:20/5:45 right at my predicted time.  If nothing else I can gauge my fitness level pretty well.

Our team ran really well, taking second place to Whirlaway by only 29 seconds!

I'm not sure what I'll be doing the rest of the summer but it will definitely include a lot of racing as long as my body allows.  I need to make up for those 6 weeks I lost...

Nebraska

07-23-11
Another short night saw us up at 4:30am and off to another tri-state point.  We arrived at the CO, NE, KS point at 6:45am and decided it would be best to get an early run in (it was going to be a really hot day).  It was 70 and sunny when we headed out for a 45 minute run then visited the tri-state marker.

Next up was Panorama Point (5,424’) which is the highest point in Nebraska.  The final ½ mile was rough but signs indicated hiking was not allowed because it was an active bison ranch.  We spent just a few minutes taking in the view of Wyoming and the mountains of Colorado before heading for the final tri-state point of the trip.

We parked about ¾ of a mile away from the point where CO, NE, and WY meet and headed out for another 45 minute run that included a bit of off road to get to the tri-state point.  We had to be careful dodging cow droppings and cows (with shouts of “hey cow, no cow”) but safely completed our run.  At 11 am it was right around 90 degrees.

We headed for Denver for our final night and decided to get another run in. The 100 degree heat wasn’t too bad when the wind was in our faces but the tailwind just made it seem REALLY hot.  We ended up running 3 miles to get a 14 mile day.  This was also our longest day of driving with 450 miles.  The next morning (4am) we ran 4.5 miles then headed for home.  Mission accomplished.

Oklahoma & Kansas

07-22-11
Eric and I were up again at 4:30 am and out the door by 5 for the 2+ hour drive to Black Mesa (OK).  There was very little traffic on the route we chose and for the most part I could drive 70 MPH.  The only tricky part was watching for wildlife that might jump onto the road.  We saw quite a few deer and at one point passed a mother and baby bear who took off in opposite directions as we passed.  By 7:30 we were on the trail heading for the summit.

This 9m round trip had “only” 600’ of climb and descent but both of us had pretty sore quads from the downhill on Mt Elbert.  We took it pretty easy (most of the climb is in a ½ mile section) and reached the summit monolith in 42 minutes.  We spent less than 10 minutes taking pictures and getting a quick drink and then headed down.  Our descent wasn’t much faster (quads) but we managed it in 39 minutes for a total round trip of 1:31:54.  It was getting pretty warm the last couple of miles and with predicted high temperatures over 100 we were glad to have this done by 9am.

Next we drove about 10 minutes to visit the tri-state point where CO, NM, and OK meet.
Action Dave in three states

After that we headed off to Texas County OK which was the only county high point we visited that was not a State High Point.  After a quick 15 minute hike we headed off to another tri-state marker this one was where CO, KS, and OK met.  There was a cool windmill at the site along with the benchmark and 3 witness markers.

Our final trek was to the Mount Sunflower (4,039’), the highest point in KS.  We parked below the summit (about 20’ below) and went for a run partly because we needed some more mileage and partly because there was already a group at the summit.  We ran about 4 miles including the “ascent” to the top of Kansas.  It was 98 degrees and sunny, but the southerly wind helped it feel not quite as bad as it could have.  We took some pictures and then headed to Goodland KS for the night.

420 miles of driving and I was pretty beat!

Colorado High Point

Western trip

07-20-11
I’d been planning this trip for about 8 months and was excited to be finally heading out to Colorado.  The plan was to hit the highest point in CO, OK, KS, and NE and also visit a few tri-state points (places where three states meet) and also get a couple of county high points.  Long-time teammate Eric Morse met me at Manchester airport and we headed out to Denver.  It made for a long day as both of us had been up at 4am and didn’t get to our hotel in Denver until after midnight Eastern Time).

07-21-11
After a much too short night we were up at 4:30 am and out on the road to Leadville by 5am.  Hit the trail by 7:50am.
Eric and I traded the lead every 20 minutes (we’d stop to drink, then swap the lead) as we slowly jogged our way up the mountain.  The trailhead was at 10,000’ so we were definitely feeling the altitude; both of us had been at sea level less than 24 hours earlier.  We reached the tree line and it got a bit hotter after that with no shade.  The trail also got a lot steeper and we mixed running with very fast walking from here to the summit.  For the most part it was very run-able and both of us had no trouble.  I was worried about my calf more than the altitude and neither seemed to be a bother.  A few minutes from the top we saw a guy running down and I yelled out “how fast did you get to the top”.  He stopped and of all people it was Bob Sweeney!  I was on a US 100km team with Bob about 10 years ago.  We’d done a few Ultra’s together but I hadn’t seen him since he raced Mt Washington about 5 years ago.

Bob decided to run back up to the top with us and joined us for the run down.  Apparently we’d missed him at the trail head by about 15 minutes (he reached the top in 1:42 and we were 1:51).  We spent less than 10 minutes on the summit taking some pictures and then headed down.

I swear it was easier going up; the real steep sections were very tricky.  Luckily there weren’t many people on the trail so we pretty much had the trail to ourselves.  We were back at the trailhead in 1:18 for a total time of 3:18 for the 10 mile trek with about 4,500’ of climb/descent.
Bob headed home and we headed south for Raton, NM.  Once in Raton we headed out for a 33 minute run to get the 366 miles of driving/sitting in the car out of our legs.

July gone by...

Looking back – July
20 Years ago – July 1991 I ran fiver races, four on the road and one on the toughest trail I’ve ever run.  I started the month winning the July 4th 5.2 mile race in Stoughton (24:47).  The following week I took first in the 5m Carson Memorial race (running 23:49).  I kept the winning streak alive with a 25:22 1st place at the East End Club in Lowell, a gritty old-school race that is sadly no longer held.  I won $50, taking the lead from Jim Quadros after the 3 mile mark and was definitely feeling tired from the Carson race on the previous day.  The following weekend I took first in a slow time (25:14) at the Sapienza 5m.  I think everyone had a slow time on this 100 degree day.  I closed out the month with a 6th place finish at the Escarpment trail 30k.  This was (and remains) the roughest trail race I’ve ever done.  I never felt like I could run a full stride, it was so rough and either climbing up a mountain or descending one.  Petey asked me at about ½-way if I minded if he went ahead.  I wished him luck and off he went.  About 5km later I went by him on a climb (he was walking and I wasn’t going much faster).  I was glad to just survive this one and swore I’d never go back…so far I’ve been true to my word.  Rich Fargo won the race in 2:47:51, I ran 3:02:54, and Petey ran 3:14:31.

15 years ago – July 1996 was another busy month; I raced five times including a mountain race and a New England road championship.  I started the month in Bridgton Four Mile on the fourth of July.  I got buried in the last mile as Rusty Snow (very cool name) flew by for the win; I took second in 19:34 to Rusty’s 19:32.

Three days later I came out on top (both figuratively and literally) beating Dan Verrington at the Mt Cranmore hill climb.  This was back in the olden days when the course was 3m and ran “just” up the mountain.  I set a course record that day and won a pair of racing snowshoes.  My next race was the Sapienza 5m where Craig Fram took the win in 25:05 and I rolled in 14 seconds later.  I had no idea who the guy with a Mohawk and CMS singlet was who took it out, turned out to be Richard Bolt who I’ve been friends with since.

A week later I ran 15:06 to win the Race for the Cure in Manchester VT.  I’m not sure why I ran this race.  Counting walkers over 4,000 participated and I was alone from ½ mile and won by over a minute.  Two days later I finished a disappointing 5th place at the USATF NE 10m championships in Newburyport (Yankee Homecoming).  Craig Fram was the top USATF finisher, cracking 50 (49:57).  I had a lousy last two miles and came across the line in 50:23.  Fifty-eight people broke 5:30 pace that night!

10 years ago – July 2011 featured only two races but a total of 58 miles of racing!  I took 10th place at the USATF NE 8 mile road race championships at Stowe VT in 41:12.  I was disappointed with the time and place and noted in my training log “felt lousy, Dan almost got me”.  Two weeks later I headed out to Crystal Mountain WA for the 50 mile trail championships.  I ended up finishing second to Bill Emerson who power-walked away from me on the big climb from 30-36 miles.  I kept him in sight (as close as 30 seconds at 46 miles) but was never able to pull him back in.  I ended up taking 2nd place in 6:59:15.

Mt Washington - Most years between finishes

Tom Derderian asked me if I knew who had the longest amount of time between first and most recent finish at Mt Washington.  I had the database and Ken Tripp had the brains to work this out.  Below are all 253 people who have at least 20 years between finishes.  Those in red may be errors, they would have had the first run at a very young age.  If anyone can confirm or offer others that I've missed I'd be happy to update this.  The data was extracted based on first name/last name...so some could be missed if they weren't consistent (like - Bob/Robert or Jim/James).
