Week Ending 07/07/24

Full week back running after the PRP injection.  I did not feel good.  My knee has been worse each day with swelling and locking.  I may go back in and see if there is anything else I can do.  It takes 4-6 weeks for the PRP to work but the amount of pain and swelling is terrible.

With having to cancel the Erie Canal Ride, I decided to take a long weekend with the 4th of July holiday and get in some runs on rail trails I hadn't run on before.  Eric Morse came up with some ideas in NY and I was on board.

I caught some fireworks, ran on the Concord-Sunapee Rail Trail, Northern Rail Trail, Ti-Haul Trail, Shelburne Bay Trail, Adirondack Trail, Little Ausable Trail, Terry Gordon Path, and Causeway Rail Trail. We also got the "best donut in Plattsburgh", visited a letter box in the Gilliland Cemetery, and caught the ISS.  I also got in a couple of great bike rides.

 Week Ending 06/23/24

This week was my lowest mileage week this year with 80.  I had planned on dropping even lower as this was the final week before getting an injection in my knee.  I ended up keeping a few of the afternoon runs in place as Danny V was in town and this may have been the last chance to run with him before he makes the permanent move to Vermont.  As has been the case the last few weeks I struggled with not only the knee (torn meniscus and arthritis) but with just a general feeling that every run was an effort, despite running slower.  I had lower expectations leading into the weekend race and wouldn’t you know it, I ran my fastest 5k this year.

I really struggled this week with my knee.  It was swollen and tender all week and I just felt miserable.  Mt Washington did not go well despite a “low” mileage week.  82 for the week ties my low for the year.  I will have some time off after next week as I’m getting a PRP injection in my knee (if I can make it another week).  Ugh.

Wasn't sure what this week would hold.  My knee was brutal all week.  Thought that if I could not get through the 5k that I'd try to move the injection up (scheduled for the 24th).  Ran maybe my worst race of this year (20:09) and it felt harder than I raced at USATF last month (18:38).  The only "good" I'll take is that I got through the week and covered 86 miles AND although my knee was very tender during the race it did not "grab".  Am I whistling in the graveyard or will I be able to do two more weeks of this?

Notched another 85 mile week despite a lot of knee pain.  Got the results of my MRI.  No stress fracture but substantial arthritis behind the patella and a small tear in the meniscus.  Going to see if I can make it another 3 weeks before getting a PRP injection and see what that does.

Nice weekend with some running in Vermont with Eric (and visiting his new puppy) and rail trail running in Concord...and of course a nice couple of hours on the bike.

My plan was to ease back a bit this week and see if that would help with racing as I had the USATF NE 5km championships on Sunday.  I ended up not really easing back with an 84 mile week and even had my fastest times for my morning 6 mile on the rail trail.  I did get my knee checked which has been lousy for 3 weeks.  Need an MRI to see what is going on.  This is the same knee that had a bursa issue and torn meniscus last fall.  Time will tell.

This was a bit of a surprising week with a lot of quicker runs.  I'm trying to listen to my body and really only check the watch AFTER I've finished the run.  I had my quickest morning runs this year and I closed out the week with a preview of the Aviation Museum 5m course in my fastest time for a 10 mile training run this year (granted I haven't done many runs longer than 7 miles). I'm hoping to race in Londonderry next weekend but will wait until a couple of days before to sign up.

A big week with over 90 miles which was unintended.  I'd put in a couple of big days early in anticipation of easing back into the weekend, but then just didn't ease up.  My ankle has been pretty lousy and the cortisone shot didn't seem to help.  The doctor noted that "there may be a time when the shot doesn't help" and I guess I'm at that point.  I had an uninspired race on Friday night but that kicked off a very nice weekend..

Passed 160,000 miles lifetime this week.  14 weeks this year and my lowest week was 82 and highest was 94.  Still having issues with my left ankle but getting it checked out this week.  Pretty amazing week with the eclipse, skiing, some great runs, and biking in weather that felt like Spring.

My ankle has been shit for almost 2 months and this week was no exception.  I managed 84 miles despite the snowstorm and the ankle crappiness. I also raced at the end of the week.  More on that later.  Needless to say as my ankle goes so do I.

This week involved a lot of travel and after doing a 10 mile run on Tuesday I never felt very good.  At times I felt downright awful. My cranky ankle (crankle) was really bothering me.  It has been ramping up over the last couple of weeks. I managed 83 miles was my third lowest this year but not exactly a "rest" week.  I'd hoped to get in a decent run at the 15k championship which would be my first race as a 60 year-old.

I closed out my final week as a 50s runner with another 80+ mile week.  I started my vacation a day early to avoid the snow and I'll pay for the lack of sleep for a few days.  Ankle has been feeling lousy lately, might be time to see my podiatrist again.

A week of tweaks.  Did something to my left knee avoiding a dog bite on Monday and on Saturday my left knee/hamstring/calf were giving me grief.  The hamstring tear seems to crop up now and then.  I think maybe compensation for the other leg is causing the issue.  Hoping I can ease up a bit and run through it.

On a happier note, I went to the NCAA D1 track nationals at New Balance.  Big group - Doug & Manny D., Dave-la, Danny V., Greg, Joe, and Jim P.  Also hung out with the NH crew (Scott C, Ernie, Tim C, Jay S) and got in a nice run around the Charles river.  Definitely a worthwhile trek.
