Albino Squirrel

I've seen a lot of wildlife on the run but today was the first time I spotted an albino squirrel.  At first I thought the heat had gotten to me, but I checked online after the run and they are rare but out there.

Pretty cool info:

Albino Squirrel also sounds like a good name for my punk band.

Yankee Homecoming

Good luck to everyone running Newburyport tonight!

I’ve had decent luck at the 10 mile although I’ve never won (got 2nd place twice).  Hard to believe it has been 30 years since the first time I raced at the Yankee Homecoming.

My final race of the month in July of 1985 was the Yankee Homecoming 10 mile in Newburyport.  This was my first attempt at 10 miles and I went in with rookie optimism hoping to run around 49 flat (from the presumption that a 24:30 wasn’t hard so two in a row should be manageable).  I struggled after four miles, hit 5 miles in 24:36 and ran the second 5 miles in 25:34 for a 50:10 fifth place finish and a lesson in long-distance running.
Here are my results at Newburyport:

Date                  Time     Pl          Notes:
07/30/85           50:10    5          Yankee Homecoming - 80s humid 442/930/1415/1920/2436

07/28/92           50:17    3          NEAC 10M - Big group of 10 at 5, 6 at 8, then Bagley went, got Fram in last 100m.
08/03/93           50:25    3          NEAC 10M - 90 humid, cut knee on guardrail before race.  Karari 48:56

All-Terrain series

I've posted the current standings through the 5,000 meters (out door track).  There are tabs for Men, Women, and Age Groups along with tabs for "Best 3" and "Best 4" scores.  Those may be the most important tabs since the series ultimately is a best 5 of 7.  As such you can see who MAY still be in the battle for the top spots.

Day off (from work)

I had today off from work so I figured out some fire tower sites that I could visit.

I went to Rockport and caught sunrise before a 3 mile run up down Pool Hill (former fire tower site).
After that it was off to Essex/Manchester-by-the-sea for the Morse hill fire

Level Renner 10k

Level Renner 10k:

I got a free entry to the Level Renner 10k as a contributor to the magazine.  It is rare to get a freebie so I like to take advantage when I can.  I wasn’t feeling great during the week and the hot and humid weather predicted for race day wasn’t helping me to feel any better.

I hadn’t raced in Brockton since 2009 but looked forward to going back to DW Field park which is a nice traffic free loop around a couple of small lakes.  It is scenic (although a bit rolling) and shaded for the most part as you loop through the 250 hectares of fields and woodlands.  My original goal was to run under 6:00 pace but considering the weather I thought aiming for right at 6’s might be do-able.

I met up with CMS teammates Joe Shairs, Jim Pawlicki, and Dan Vassallo and headed out to check out the first shorter loop of the two loop course.  The hill at the start of the race would be climbed three times which would be tough, it was only about 1/10th of a mile but the grade was as steep as 10%.  I don’t do well at switching gears, so I knew that part of the course would be my major weakness.  The field was pretty stacked as there was some open money in addition to some team money and masters cash.

The field of 200+ seemed to blast out at the start.  I went out conservatively (3:06 for the first ½ mile according to my Garmin).  As we rolled down the hill I started reeling in some of the quick starters.  By the mile (just under 6) I was in the middle of a group that was also running just under 6’s.  It was nice to have company but I was also looking up ahead to a couple of “older” CSU runners and especially to teammate Arthur Beesse.  I was pretty sure Arthur was 5th man so I was gunning for him to score for the team.

I passed through the 3 mile mark just under 18 minutes (17:58) which put me 15 seconds behind Arthur.  It was really hot and humid over the next 2 miles which were mostly unshaded.  I caught up to him at 4.5 but just like the Hollis 5k he was not done.  We had a good back and forth over the next mile and just before final climb up Castle hill he moved ahead (5 miles in 29:59).  I had no response and just hung on hoping to make it up the hill without collapsing.  I crossed the line in 22nd place running 37:22, glad to be done.

Level Renner put on a nice post-race spread and a big award ceremony and raffle.  I hung out for most of it, spending some time chatting with teammates and other long-time running cohorts.

Week Ending 07-19-15
This was not a great week for me.  My ankle was still sore from Loon, now two weeks removed.   When my ankle is sore I tend to favor it and that leads to other parts being sore.  My goals was to run “fast” at the Level Renner 10k, whatever “fast” means.  I had a good effort at the race and I got in 80 miles for the week so I can’t really complain.

East End Club 5 mile

15 years ago (yesterday) I showed up at the East End Club road race looking to get some points in the Hockomock Swamp Rat series.  I’d had good luck at the EEC race (28th running this year), but not on this day.  During my warmup I rolled my ankle badly.  I couldn’t bail since I needed the points, so I used a roll of duct tape I had in the car and gave it a shot.  I managed to stick with Eric Beauchesne for the first couple of miles but then reality hit and he took off to the win.  I hobbled home with my slowest EEC finish.

I ran the East End Club race five times and won four of those times:
07-22-84               1st           24:26
07-12-87               1st           24:34
07-14-91               1st           25:22     Ran with Jim Quadros for first three
07-19-92               1st           24:30     2nd place Dave Cremin 24:57
07-16-90               2nd          26:32     Eric Beauchesne 1st

Good luck to everyone running this weekend, don’t forget to pack the duct tape!
My ankle hurts just looking at this picture

Ghost train and Eastern Marsh rail trail

I took advantage of a morning doctors appointment and got in a 9 mile run (62:58) on the Ghost train and Eastern marsh rail trail in Amesbury.  Getting out at 8am was nice since it was already 80 degrees and 100% humidity.  Post-run dunkachino helped cool me down.

Mt Washington on foot and wheels

My CMS teammate Erik Vandendries had an unusual double this weekend, taking on the Newton’s revenge on Saturday and the Cranmore mountain race on Sunday.  Newton’s revenge is a bike race up the Mt Washington Auto road and Cranmore is a running race up (and down) Mt Cranmore.  His 5th place finish at Mt Washington and 6th place finish at Cranmore are impressive feats but I think his other “double” is even more impressive.

Erik ran his first Mt Washington earlier this year posting a 1:12:20 to take third place in the 50+ age division.  His time was the 6th fastest ever run by anyone over the age of 50.  Add to that his 1:03:15 from Newton’s revenge and he rode/ran a combined time of 2:15:35.  It got me thinking if anyone has gone faster.  I scoured the results, cutting off at 1:15 for both of the bike races and the running race.  I have the running results back to the very beginning and was able to get all of the Newton’s revenge results (this year was the 10th).  The hill climb bike race is entering its 43rd year but I was only able to get results back to 1997.

In the last 19 years I found no runners (except Erik) who have done one of the bike races and the running race in the same year.  Only two other runners had gone under 1:15 on the bike and on foot.  Erik’s combined time of 2:15:35 tops both.

If anyone has results from earlier years I’d love to get that info!

Fast Mt Washington double

CMS teammate Erik Vandendries completed an excellent Mt Washington double with his 5th place finish in the Bicycle race to go with his 3rd place in the 50+ at the running race.

Loon Mountain race (USATF NE Mountain champs)

I came off of the Mt Washington road race with a slightly strained calf muscle which had me seriously considering not going to the Loon Mountain race over the July 4th weekend.  Fortunately the calf seemed pretty good in the week leading up to the race and I stayed on top of doing stretches, heating, icing and rolling.  On race morning I also taped it up and wore compression socks.  I really wanted to do Loon as it is one of my favorite races.  It is the closest to European-style Mountain racing that we have.  I’m not as good at this style of racing (I’m better at long steady grinds) but I’ve had good luck at Loon and only missed it once in the 10 years it has been held.

Last year Loon was not only the New England championships, it was also the National championships.  I had captured the 50+ title last year and hoped to repeat (as NE champ) this year.  The competition would be tougher this year as teammate Erik Vandendries was now 50 and he was running very well this year.  The course was slightly modified from last year due to construction.  They cut out the first ½ mile of flat running on dirt and pavement and instead we’d climb 50’ up a grass hill in the first 1/10th of a mile and catch onto the course on the access road.  They also added back the ½ mile drop from the top of the Upper Walking Boss (UWB) back down to the Gondola.  As such I broke the course down into what I hoped would be manageable pieces.  The first mile to the XC loop, the two miles of XC loop, the 2 mile (mostly climb) to the Gondola, half-mile down to UWB, half-mile up UWB, and finally the drop back to the finish.

Dan Verrington and I met up with teammate (and top 60+ runner) Paul Baz and went out for a flat and easy 3 mile warm-up.  I changed into Inov-8 trail shoes and did another ½ mile to see how they felt.  Then it was off to the start with nearly 400 others.  I had seen Kim Nedeau and Kasie Enman warming up.  They’d be the top two women and I figured they’d be tough competition for me on this day.  Kasie buried me at Sleepy Hollow last year and Kim finished a scant couple of seconds behind me at Wachusett.  Both are excellent cross-country runners and have good speed so I thought keeping them in sight would be a good early goal.

Off we went up the grass slope and onto the cat track.  I found myself in about 50th place in the first ½ mile.  Either I always go out too conservatively or others go out way too fast but this was no time to panic.  I could see Erik V a little ahead and felt I was putting in the proper effort.  Right before the XC loop both Kasie and Kim went by.  I had moved up to about 30th place by the mile and felt the 2 miles of XC were just a place to maintain pace and hopefully not break an ankle in the mud and rocks.  I caught 1 or 2 people and also got passed by 1 or 2 so overall not much of a change.

Checking Strava data after the race I found that I’d run that 2 mile loop 17 seconds faster than I did in 2014.  I didn’t know that at the time and didn’t really care about that or about time.  The only thing that mattered was place in the 50+ age group.

I came out of the loop 30+ seconds behind Erik V and 15 behind teammate Jim Pawlicki (who was running with Kasie).  We climbed 200’ in ¼ mile which helped me close the gap a bit, then the traverse across the face of the mountain strung everyone out again.  At 3.7 miles we hit the first punishing climb of the race.  This is where things usually start to come together for me.  I could see 10 guys in a line in front of me and as is usually the case many were walking (450’ of climb in .3 will do that to you!).  I started reeling people in which always feels good, even when you are hurting.  From 4 miles to 4.2 we had a quick downhill on dirt then a mile with over 700’ of climb.

I didn’t know it at the time but I was actually in 3rd place at the time (in the 50+).  Jeff Hunt form GCS was between me and Erik at this point.  I caught him along with Alex Hall (WRT) and closed the gap on Erik.  I was hoping to get him before the top as I didn’t want to be in a battle with anyone on the UWB.  It would be very easy to run too hard with someone pushing you and once you get in trouble it is impossible to recover.  A better plan is to just listen to your body and use whatever it gives you.  I grabbed a water at the Gondola and on the first steep pitch heading down to UWB I passed Erik.  My hamstring was bothering me, probably from braking on the downhill, but I tried to open up my stride.  I could see teammate Matt Veiga up ahead and set my sights on him.

Finally I hit the Upper Walking Boss, which is the defining feature of the course.  It is a 1km (.6 mile) stretch with 40% grades.  Typically I can make up a lot of time on this section.  I caught Matt pretty quickly and he said something like “they are all catchable”.  I kept looking up and seeing the guys walking above me.  My goal has always been to run the entire stretch but calling it “running” may not be correct.  There was one dirt wall that I power-walked on for four or five strides and then it was back to running.  As I neared the top I caught teammate Chris Mahoney and very nearly caught Scott Leslie who was battling with Ethan Nedeau.

Then we hit the downhill, dropping 350’ in ½ mile, and those guys in front were out of sight.  About halfway down the slope Chris apologized as he went by, I should have apologized for slowing him down!  I hit the bottom and pushed for the line hoping that no one was closing on me.  The last little pitch to the line really kicked the snot out of me and I had to stand at the finish for a minute as my legs were shaking.  I was happy to find out later that I’d taken the win in the 50+ with Erik taking 2nd 52 seconds behind me.

The CMS club had a great day winning the championship in the Open, masters, and seniors, and also taking the women’s open title.  Since my ankle does not like downhill this will most likely be my last mountain race of the year.  I’m glad to end on a high note.
