Plantar Fascia update

After two hours on the bike and 80 minutes of water running (with DQ), I headed to New England Foot and ankle (my podiatrist).  They do a great job and are very sports minded.  I discussed with Dr. G what had happened and before I could even mention my racing schedule she asked "What is the next thing you need to be ready for".  Perfect question.  This weekend I'm hitting the high points in MI, MN, WI and the following weekend is the Mt Ashland Hill Climb.  Both I'd planned for quite a while and both I'm going to even if I couldn't run (paid for, gotta go).

After many questions about my training, racing, and how the PF has been feeling the prognosis is that I probably have a small tear.  It is right in the region from before, but the sudden onset probably means a tear of some kind.  Definitely not a complete tear or anything quite that extensive.  There is an outside chance that I've just reaggrivated it and anti-inflams and ice/rest will get me back running.  So the plan included a cortisone shot (done), back in the boot (done), and the ice/rest route.  The rest of the plan is to start easy running in a couple of days and try and do the minimum so that I can at least hit the starting line at Ashland.

Nothing to do now but give it a go and see what happens.

Sapienza = #500

I figured that racing early this week would be out of the question after doing the Stowe 8 Mile (not “8 Miler”. What the heck is an 8 Miler, sounds like someone who runs and 8 mile race not the name of the race?). Racing this weekend was also ruled out due to plans for a Pemigewasset Wilderness traverse. A Thursday night race fit nicely into the plan and having it located so close to home made it an easy call.

This was the fifth time I’d run the Sapienza race. It is a great local race and an excellent cause, it seemed appropriate that this would mark the 500th time I’d laced up my racing flats for a road race. The race has gone through various distance and date changes over the years. This year there was also a change of venue as construction at Haverhill High School necessitated a move to the Whittier Middle School. I scouted out the course on Wednesday to see what I was in for. The course felt tough but I was hopeful that I was just feeling sluggish.

On race day I did my normal lunch 3 mile run and felt pretty decent, but that never means anything. I met up with Dan and JJ and we went out to check out the last 1.5 miles of the course. It was warm and windy and it seemed like the entire way was uphill (both ways). I finished the warm-up feeling okay except for the heat and wind and worry about the hills. My plan was to go with Dan for as long as possible, hoping to make it at least 3 miles with him. The first ¾ of a mile was all downhill so I kind of assumed that I’d be out ahead of a normal slow starting Dan but I’d be ready when he went by. I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Right from the start Dan took off. I felt like I was all out in the first 200 meters. Nate Jenkins was already nearly out of sight and JJ had a firm grip on second place. Dan tucked in behind Brian Debronsky and Christopher Donais and I was a half step back with Chris Powers. When we started climbing the first big hill at .7 Powers fell back and Dan tucked behind me as Donais and Debronsky motored away. I hit the mile (that may have been a bit short) in 5:18.

Nate continued to pull away and both he and JJ were gone as they went on toe run 19:56 and 21:18 respectively. In the second mile I moved by Donais and gapped Dan by 7 seconds as Debronsky pulled away to his eventual 50 seconds up for third place. I really felt lousy from two (11:03) on and Dan gained a little back from 2 – 2.5 but that would be as close as he got. I had 15 seconds on him at three (16:46) and doubled that in the last mile despite running a 6:18 last split. It felt a heck of a lot faster than a 5:46 effort, which was very nearly the pace I ran last weekend at Stowe for EIGHT miles.

I won $20 at Whirlaway for my efforts and enjoyed a big bowl of Moose tracks ice cream after warming down with JJ and Dan. The only sour note on the evening was my Plantar Fascia which had felt great the last nine weeks of training but chose this night to start bothering me. I’m hoping it is just a minor aggravation. On it goes.

Sapienza Results over the years:
7/19/91 ran 25:14 for 5m and placed 1st in a field of 293. It was 100 degrees with a dew point of 67.
7/23/93 ran 24:18 for 5m and placed 1st in a field of 387. I missed the course record by 1 second.
7/19/96 ran 25:18 for 5m and placed 2nd in a field of 262. Fram kicked my ass.
7/21/06 ran 22:20 for 4m and placed 6th in a field of 107. Placed 2nd 40+ behind Dan (21:22)
7/22/10 ran 23:03 for 4m and place 4th in a field of 124. Beat Dan for top masters spot.

Dan versus Dave
We have raced each other a grand total of 222 times since 1985. I’ve got the slight edge with 115 “wins” versus 106 for Dan. In the last six years (since I’ve been a master) there have been only six times (over 77 times we’ve met) that I have beaten Dan. Five of the six were mountain races and the other was a road race when Dan had walking pneumonia. Basically Dan has had my number for a LONG time. The last time I “legitimately” beat Dan in a non-Mountain race was the Stone Cat trail marathon where I finished first in 3:06:10 and Dan was second in 3:07:10. The last time I beat Dan on the road was the Stowe 8 in 2001 when I snuck across the line four seconds ahead of Dan 41:12 to 41:16.

Mileage chart

Here is what my mileage this year looks like.  Injuries early in the year, then surgery in April.  Steady climb for five weeks and now five weeks of decent training.  Hopefully I can keep my mileage in the 70-80 range (except for a couple of easy weeks) from now until the Baystate Marathon.

Winning streak

I got my win last week, but it was my fifth longest stretch without a win.  Here are the top 7 longest stretches without a "W".

05/03/05 to0 11/04/06 = 550 days
03/20/04 to  05/03/05 = 409
07/02/97 to  05/24/98 = 326
01/26/02 to 10/27/02  = 274
12/12/09 to  7/13/10 = 213
05/09/09 to 11/15/09 = 190
02/02/08 to 07/16/08 = 165

My favorite quote from reports on Stowe

Quote of the week from Greg Hammett's blog:

Staches for Stowe 8 mile road race

"It was nice to warm-up with the CMS boys and compare our sweet mustaches that most of us grew. I would put my mustache in the top 3 for CMS, it is unfair though since I have a goatee all the time, most of the guys were starting from scratch. Dave Dunham probably had the most manly stache, looking like a guy in a biker gang. The rest of the crew looked like skinny cops, adult movie stars, or 15 year old boys with peach fuzz".

Stowe 8 mile

Stowe marked my return to the road Grand Prix series.  Injuries have kept me away so far this year, so I was really looking forward to running with my teammates and seeing where my fitness level is.  I figured based on other races that I should be able to run under 6's.  I set a stretch goal of breaking 5:50 pace, thinking that if the weather wasn't bad and I had a great day that would be the outside limit of where my fitness was at.

We (me, Dan, MQ) headed up to Eric's house in Berlin and did an easy 3m run on Saturday evening prior to feasting on pizza and watching a bit of the Sox game.  On race morning we headed out early and scored a front row spot near registration.  A big group of CMS teammates gathered and we headed out for a nice 3m warm-up on the course.  Dan had been sick earlier in the morning and looked iffy to even start, which would be a major blow to our team.  We all lined up in box #1 for an XC style start, which was pretty cool.

I tried to relax as just about the entire field went by me.  Dan, who always starts slowly, drew up at about 3/4 of a mile and I focused on letting him pull me along.  Dan hit the mile in 5:45 with me 1 second back.  I got a rough count of the field and came up with about 95 guys in front of me.  I started getting into a good groove after the mile and was not passed by anyone (exception below) for the remainder of the race.  Dan got  up to 7 seconds ahead at 2 miles but I still felt he was pulling me along as we started picking off other 40+ runners (and one or two 50+).  By four miles I'd cut Dan's lead down to 3 seconds but just couldn't quite get with him. I lost 3 seconds in mile 5 and another 3 in mile six as I closed on a couple of CMS teammates and sarted moving up on Jim Pawlicki.  Dan really blasted in the seventh mile putting 7 seconds on me as we moved off the dirt road and onto the bike path.  I caught Jim P at 7 miles and worked hard to ditch him over the last mile.  He would not give an inch.  With 800m to go we passed TiVO who was having trouble with a stitch but kept putting one foot in front of the other.  I made an attempt with about 400m to go, but went too early as Jim rebounded and blew by me with less than 200 to go.

I crossed the finish in 46:30, getting back 6 seconds on Dan in the last mile (thanks to Jim who kept me working ...and was the only guy to pass me after the mile).  It was a 45 second masters PR for me and met my stretch goal, despite somewhat windy and warm conditions.  Our 40+ team ended up taking a solid third place behind Whirlaway and the very strong GMAA.  A good day for the team and I was quite pleased with my run.

Next up:  Sapienza 4m on Thursday (if I recover from the 8m in time)

The 8 mile distance was contested  (as part of theUSATF NE Grand Prix) six consecutive years beginning in 2001. It has not been part of the Grand Prix series since 2006. The Stowe 8 miler has been the host each year. CMS has won the team championship once (2001), the BAA has won four times and Whirlaway has won once. CMS holds the team record with an impressive 3:24:39 from 2001 for an average of 40:56 (5:07 pace) per scoring team member.

In 2001 CMS placed all five scoring members in the top eleven overall and took seven of the top fifteen places. That year Al Bernier and Mike Payson failed to score despite running 41:25 and 41:39 respectively. The highest placing by a CMS runner has been Eric Morse’s sixth place finish in both 2001 and 2002. Eric’s 40:39 is also the fastest time by a CMS runner at an 8 mile New England championship.
