The Rattlesnakes

I decided on a little peakbagging prior to racing up in Center Sandwich, NH.  The drive would take me right by The Rattlesnakes so I couldn't pass up a chance to get in a few miles prior to the race.  I ran a loop that had me heading up West Rattlesnake then along the ridge trail to East Rattlesnake.  After bagging both summits I decided to take the Col trail out to Rt 113 and ran back via the road.  It turned out to be a bit over 4 miles and took me over 40 minutes which made me later than I usually would be for a snowshoe race.  The only plus was that I really need the extra miles to get loose and I got some interesting peaks!

Workout

I thought I’d try another workout yesterday; Snowshoe racing doesn't help speed (although it is great for strength and mental toughness). I want to test my back and do as much as I can without getting injured. Isn’t that the trick?

I hit the treadmill at Pinnacle Physical Therapy and did a 1.5 mile warm-up (11:53), then a half-mile in 2:59.1, after a ¼ mile rest (1:53) I ran the hardest part of the workout. I felt decent running a mile in 5:27.1 (that is my fastest mile this year). Then another ¼ mile rest (1:51) and a final half-mile in 3:00.0. I finished with a 1 mile warm-down (7:02). The total time for 5 miles was 34:06. I felt very good, but I’m not sure if that really indicates anything.

This weekend should be interesting, with another snowshoe double. The Sidehiller 4m on Saturday has plenty of snow and will be substantially slower than the icy and flat version we ran last year. My times at Sidehiller tend to be somewhere in the 33 minute range. I’m hoping for a top 10 finish. The field should be pretty deep with the race being part of the WMAC and GSS series and also a qualifier for Nationals. On Sunday I plan to head to Curly’s record run which has a great climb and the craziest descent ever. It should be a lot of fun. I think the over-under for the temperature in Pittsfield is 2 degrees.

Snowshoe Double

After missing a week of training with back issues, I was cautious about doing too much too soon. Well, cautious for me. My back has felt pretty good this last week and I tested it out mid-week with a snowshoe run and late week with a short speed workout. Neither seemed to make my back worse so I was off to the race.

I headed up to Intervale NH for the first annual Whitaker Woods 4 mile race on Saturday. It was 5 degrees when I went through North Conway and there were some spectacular views of Mt Washington. It seemed to warm up a bit and there wasn’t much wind in the woods so it was surprisingly comfortable.

Paul Bazanchuk joined me for a warm-up over the first 1.5 of the course, which was packed/groomed well enough that we didn’t use snowshoes. I headed out for an additional mile (checking out the last .5 of the course) in snowshoes. About 50 people lined up and boy did the race go out fast. I wasn’t in the top 10 in the first 200m through the baseball field. I slowly moved up and was in 8th on the first big climb. By the mile I was in 6th and although the leaders were out of sight Tim Cox and Ryan Kelly were only about 15 seconds ahead.

The second mile seemed to take forever but I started to close on Cox and Kelly. By three miles Tim had really started moving and he blew by Kelly and was out of site. I caught Kelly on the single-track section and tried to gap him. He fell back a little but really re-grouped and hammered the last ¾ of a mile. He beat me by 10 seconds but lost at least 5 seconds when he missed a turn (a few people missed turns but most ended up actually running a shorter course).

All in all it was a fun event, just a bit too fast for me. Kevin Tilton not only directed and timed but also finished in 3rd place. This race will be on my “must do” list for next year.

The second half of the double-header was the 2nd annual Constitution hill race in Lanesboro, MA. I arrived pretty early but Laurel Shortell (streak of over 100 consecutive finishes in WMAC SS races) and Ed Alibozek (he is WMAC snowshoe) were already parked at the end of the road. It was 2 degrees but sunny and this course was going to be the absolute opposite of the race on Saturday. Most of the course had not been broken and some that had been broken had drifting. This was going to be SLOW, just what I like.

I met up with Tim Mahoney who had been in the train that broke trail the day before at Hoot, Toot, and Whistle. We warmed-up on the road doing an easy (not that easy) three miles. I got on my race gear which included a bib with a “target” on it. Laura Clark hands out a couple of targets at every race and everyone tries to run down the marked runner. I thought that sounded pretty cool. I headed out for another mile or so on snowshoes checking out a little of the course and breaking out some of the opening loop on the field.

London Niles, a very experienced racer despite his age (12), took off like a shot at the start. He hammered the first 200m then stepped off the course. I led the chase pack at that point and moved into the lead. I felt pretty good despite the very deep powder and just kept it going at a decent clip. The entire field was right behind me, getting better footing as each person packed it down.

I stayed out in front for 20 minutes then Tim Van Orden took over for a bit. We hit the snowmobile trail and he took off. I reeled him back in on the climb up Constitution hill as he slowed breaking trail in the deep untracked snow. I took the lead again on top of the ridge as Tim Mahoney and Ken Clark closed in on us. We were barely moving in the knee deep untracked snow. Tim M and Ken went to the front as TiVo and I stepped aside. They only lead for a short stretch as we hit the downhill and TiVo plowed by into the lead. I went around Ken near the bottom of the hill but couldn’t get around Tim M over the last ¼ mile of the race, there was nowhere to pass and when I finally hit a spot Tim was moving way too fast for me to get around. TiVo blew doors in the last ½ mile and put 20 seconds on us for the win. There was a big gap to the next group after Ken came through. This was a very cool race, it reminded me of the old days of racing at WMAC when you were lucky if ANY of the course was tracked. I’m looking forward to more slogs like this! Total driving for the weekend over 500 miles.

A workout (of sorts)

I’ve been testing my back, since missing a week earlier this month, by adding a little mileage and picking up the pace. I decided to try something a little quicker yesterday. I’m planning on doing some snowshoe racing this weekend and thought it would be a good idea to see how snowshoe running and speed work felt. On Tuesday I did a 5m snowshoe run with JJ and had no repercussions. Yesterday seemed like the logical time to try something ‘fast’ as I was going to be at Pinnacle PT and the treadmill gives the opportunity to opt out at the first signs of trouble.

After getting my back worked on, I hit the treadmill and did 1.5 miles at an easy pace (8:00/mile). I followed that with 3 x ½ mile at 2:43.5 per with a ¼ mile rest at 7:00 pace. I finished with an easy half mile. Total time for 4m = 26:55.

So far so good…

South Pond Shuffle - 2003

JJ sent me this picture on Friday, checking my ability to remember past races.  I did a little research and guessed that it was from 2003 (because of the Cresent Moon Snowshoes on Paul Low #433).  I incorrectly guessed that it was from the Saratoga Spa race.

This was just before the start of the South Pond Shuffle in 2003 which I ended up winning.  Today I'll settle for just being able to go out and run.

Week ending 01-09-11

Ugly week…

Total of 27 miles and the end of my streak without missing a day (last DO was in July). I ran 5 on Wednesday morning and felt good, but after the run my back began to hurt by 9am I was in agony. I got checked out by my PT and an appointment on Monday with my Orthopedic Doctor. Mixed results from the Doctors visit. It doesn’t appear to be a stress fracture, due to the location on the sacrum but it also isn’t a location with much muscle/ligaments. Time will tell.

M – 3 @ lunch on treadmill. PM 8++ hilly miles with JJ including two of the four highest points in Methuen.

T – 3 @ lunch on treadmill. PM 8 with Dan at his work.

W – 430am Industrial park 5. Unable to run PM

WMAC all-time wins

There have been 131 WMAC series races since Feb of 1998. Seven CMS runners rank among the top ten in wins. In all CMS runners have won 76 races. Although the season has just started (two races) Jim Johnson and Tim Van Orden have already picked up wins and moved up the list with Jim now in 5th all-time and TiVO ranking 8th. With the possibility of another 15 races there could be a shake-up in the leader board.

January...years gone by

I started out the year with a new Billerica High school record for 2 miles (indoors) with a 9:41.6 at the Dartmouth relays. I’m not sure what the old school record was but it was held by Kevin Curtin. A week later I broke that record with a 5th place finish at the Coaches Invitational at Harvard. I ran 9:33.7 in a race won by Mike Flynn who ran 9:12. I ran two other two miles that month, both at Methuen High school and both wins. I ran 9:56 in a dual meet against Lowell and a 9:49 in a dual meet versus Wilmington.

I ran six races during January of 1991, ranging from 1 mile to 5 miles. I placed first in five of them and the other was a relay. After a 16:23 at the Fudgicle series 5k I headed to Dartmouth and lead off a 4x1mile team with Brad, Gary and Artie running 4:20, 4:30, 4:38, and 4:50 respectively. The next day I ran the open mile in 4:20.6. I returned to Tewksbury two more times running 15:59 and 16:17 and closed out the month with a victory at the Penacook Winter challenge 5m where I ran 24:53.

Six races and five wins to kick off 1996. I started the year with a tough battle against Dan and Rob Pierce at the Hangover 10k. I didn’t pull away for good until less than ½ mile to go and ended up with the “W” by just a few seconds (30:28). A few days later I went for a “triple” at the Dartmouth relays. I took first in the mile, 3,000, and 5,000 in 4:12, 8:44, and 15:39 respectively. Maybe that took a bit too much out of me? I suffered at the Ras Na Heiran (Race of Ireland) where I finished 20th in a very tough XC race. I closed out the month with a win at the Freeze your Bunz 5m race in Nashua in 25:41.

Five races and five wins to kick off the new millennium. I started off with a “Rat Race” win at the Weary Traveler running 25:03 on the “short five” course. The following week I won at the South Pond Shuffle, which remains one of my favorite snowshoe races. I followed that up with a win at Greylock glen, which is the snowshoe race I’ve done the most times (seven). The following day I won the tough Boston Prep 16 mile in an awful snowstorm. I would have been better off racing in snowshoes! The final race of the year was a very fast snowshoe race in Stillwater NY. As I recall Robert broke his snowshoe and was disqualified.

Wicked Frosty Four

This was the second year in a row that I kicked things off with the Wicked Frosty Four in Salem, MA.

Action Dave  (above in the snowbank) and I got there early and took time to get some pictures with Miles Fartlek, the Wicked RC mascot.

Miles is hard to see, he is a black cat in a red shirt
I warmed up on the course, checking out the final 1.5 miles.  That gives me a better feel for the last part of the race.  Conditions were pretty near ideal with temps in the upper 40s, no wind and partly cloudy skies.

It looked like a record field (449 last year) lined up for the start on the cobblestones.  I set up in the middle of the road and shook hands with Alex Gomes (runner up from last year - 21:40) a Junior at Salem State.  I felt pretty good warming up and as we headed out it was just me and Alex by the first turn.  We hit the mile in 5:25 which was a couple of seconds slower than last year.  I felt pretty decent and worked hard on the slightly uphill section at 1.5, for a moment Alex fell back but then powered by.  I was still with him at 2m (10:57/5:32) but right after 2 I began to fall off.  This put me 6 seconds behind last years split at 2.

Alex slowly pulled away, and especially moved on the slight downhill into 3m.  I hit 3m in 16:33 (5:36).  I hadn't given up and this split was 11 seconds faster than what I ran last year.  I knew I had a shot at a 40+ PR and I kept working.  I crossed the line in second place in 22:07 (5:34) which put me 15 seconds up on last years time and one place better.  Alex cruised to victory at about 21:30, just off Mike Quintal's record from last year.

The gloves are off!
It was a pretty good start to the new year.  Icing my ankles and hoping tomorrow will be a decent day.
