On Saturday I headed up to Plymouth NH for the Pemi Youth 5km. I decided not to run Wachusett mountain when I saw the new course (which doesn't go to the summit and has some technical trail = bad for ankles). There were a lot of different races to choose from but I decided on the Pemi race because it was an early start (9:00am) and it was a certified course. I had also run it last September and felt I could really improve on my time from then (17:40).
Only 75 showed up for this race that had cash for the top 3 and plent of food and drink after the race. Maybe it is the location or the timing? Who can say. Anyway, I got there and hit the course for a warm-up. The first mile is basically flat and then there are a couple of rolling hills to about 1.5. At that point you hit the rail trail (dirt) for .75 then the last part of the race retraces your steps. A nice fair loop. I changed into racing flats and headed out for another mile with some strides. My Achilles has been bothering me since Northfield but it felt decent on the warm-up and doing strides.
I headed for the line and after some race instructions (does anyone actually comprehend any course description while standing on the line trying to keep the demons at bay?). We took off and 100m into the race I was in fourth place and alone as the top three flew and I established my position as the first person who wouldn't win any cash :-)
I hit the mile right where I'd hoped to be (5:21) and was already more than 30 seconds out of the lead. I tried to keep the tempo up on the rollers and on the dirt and was happy to see a 10:48 at 2 miles (5:27). I kept working as hard as I could but slowed a bit...hitting 3 miles in 16:20 (5:32). I pushed the last part which was a bit downhill and hit the line in 16:52.7 (32.7). I headed out for onto the course to offer encouragement and get in another 4+ miles to close out the day.
I'm pretty happy with the race. I would have liked to run in the 16:40's but with the higher mileage (I went 17 the day before the race) I probably am not as rested as I need to be. My focus has been to prepare for Mt Washington and Cranmore and with 3 weeks to go I think I'm just about ready. Next week I'll drop down and hopefully run a season best for 5k at Rhody.

Week Ending 05-29-11
Had another solid week of running but had to skip the track workout this week. My right Achilles has been sore since racing Northfield last week, tested it with a race on Saturday and it felt "okay". Hope to drop down my mileage this week, hit the track, then run as fast as possible at Rhody.

Call me "The Dean"
Article from Runner's World. The article itself was a nice look at the Mt Washington race from a first timers view. As far as the part below, I didn't pick the seven races (I certainly wouldn't pick Pack Monadnock as a "7 Severe Summit". I don't think ANYONE has EVER called me "the dean of mountain running". Now I'd like EVERYONE to call me that! ;-)

Northfield Mountain USATF NE trail championship
Northfield
I’ve been going out to Northfield to direct and race for nearly a decade and the time is right to move on. I still plan on directing the snowshoe race, but this year I directed my final spring race. The race has been part of the WMAC trail series and part of the USATF NE mountain series since the beginning. It has also hosted the US mountain running team selection race and been named either the New England Mountain or New England Trail championship multiple times. Needless to say I’m very happy about it being a success.
I headed out on Friday and did a loop of the course on my own putting out the mile markers. After a quick break to gather up a few hundred flags I headed out again this time with Tim Mahoney and Paul Bazanchuk. Both have assisted me in the past and made this task much easier and much more enjoyable. It was a great day to be out in the woods but over 2 hours of running probably isn’t the best way to prepare to race. We set up the finishing area and the registration inside and were done by 2 PM. I picked up race day food supplies and shocked the gal at the register by purchasing over 100 bananas. I was enjoying the pool/Jacuzzi at the Brattleboro Holiday Inn by 5 PM.
I didn’t sleep well that night. I never sleep well before a race and it is much worse when I’m directing. After a stop at Dunkin’s I pulled into the visitor’s center ahead of schedule but found I was not the first to arrive. I did however beat Jim Johnson to the race which is unusual. The efficient DRC crew handled number pick up so I was able to sneak out at 8:30 and get in a little warm-up. I did 2 miles then switched into racing flats. Then it was time to get going. After describing the course and the many ways that you could get disqualified we were off.
I felt sluggish but not too bad as I got out with no trouble. I was around 20th place when we reached the gate. I was surprised at how “slowly” the leaders had taken it out. I tried to focus on Todd Callaghan, Joe Shairs, and George Adams. Tim Van Orden (TiVO) was already well ahead so the others would be the next master (40+). Todd slowly pulled away as I got George just before the mile and Joe on the tough climb in the “chute’. After passing Joe I tried to focus on closing the gap to three teammates who were about 15 seconds up. Tim Mahoney, Tom Brown, and Ross Krause were running pretty much together and I felt that the only chance I had to beat any of them would be to outclimb them. Unfortunately Northfield is a fast course (fast being a relative term). It seems that any decent climb is followed by a significant flat section and sometimes even a short downhill stretch. I’m not good at shifting gears, but I slowly began reeling the guys in.
I caught the three just before the summit as Ross took a major spill on the only bit of bare rock on the course. Luckily he was okay and bounced back up. I moved into 12th place as we started the downhill. It was short lived as Tom went flying by at the four mile mark and Ross soon after (he encouraged me to go with him and I tried my best). We never quite got back to Tom but Ross and I went back and forth until just after the six mile mark. He gapped me on the final little uphill but I reeled him back in on the last downhill. I couldn’t quite get by him on the last flat sprint to the finish and had to settle for 14th place and 3rd in the 40+. I just missed my best time on the course coming up 2 seconds shy of my 2009 time. For the first time in my life I finished a race with just one shoe. My (double knotted) right shoe came untied about 2 miles into the race and got looser as the race went on. I thought my shoe would come off on the steep drop near 5 miles but I couldn’t stop to re-tie it. I figured I’d just run until it came off and then finish with one shoe. I lucked out and the shoe stayed on until the last 100m when I just stepped right out of it. This was a first for me, and I hope to never repeat that.
I caught my breath as quickly as I could and headed to the chute to work pulling tear-tags. For the next hour I worked results and then handed out awards. After everything was packed up I headed out to run the course one more time. Ben Nephew joined me and we ran the course in reverse to ensure that the five “missing” people weren’t still out there (they weren’t) and then called it a day…a long day!

Long run
I ran 13 miles today with Dave Q, JJ, and Dan. This was my longest continuous run of this year and closed out my biggest week so far this year (90 miles). We also bagged the summit of Wood hill in Andover (twice). I hadn't been up that way in a while and it was nice to do a run that tied together the River Trail and Rafton Reservation. Most of the run was on the Bay Circuit Trail.

Track Workout – 05-17-11
What a great afternoon for a track workout! I actually broke out the light gloves to wear during this one. Drizzle and 40 degree temperatures meant that Craig would be wearing multiple layers during the workout (but oddly not wearing gloves). We hit the track a day early due to work constraints for both me and Craig. This was our second time doing the 3 x 1 Km workout and it felt a lot better than last week despite being quite a bit quicker. Dan led the first one but then bailed due to stomach issues. I led the second one and had to pick it up a bit in the last 200, because we slowed up down the front straight when we nearly ran into the entire PA track team doing drills. It’s their track and we are guests so no complaints from me. Actually one of the kids said “nice workout” when we finished. That made my day! Anyway, Craig led the last one and ran a nice even (fast) pace. All in all it was a very good workout and I’m finally starting to gain some confidence.
3 x 1,000 meters with 600 meters rest
3:13.5 (77.4 400m pace)
3:14.0 (77.6 400m pace)
3:12.5 (77.0 400m pace)
The last time I ran this workout this fast was almost exactly 3 years ago (05-15-08) with Dave Quintal and Dan. Almost exactly the same times - 3:15.3/3:14.3/3:12.6. I went on to run my 40+ PR at Mt Washington that year (1:09:08), so maybe that is a good sign.

USATF NE 10,000 meters - Track championships!
USATF New England Outdoor Track Championships
A few weeks ago I was looking through the calendar trying to figure out what race to run on the weekend of June 11/12 when I came across the USATF NE track championships. Earlier this spring I ran a 5,000 on the track and it reminded me of how much I truly enjoy racing on the track. I checked over the entry form for the NE’s and found that there was no 10,000. I find the 5,000 to be an all-out sprint and was really hoping to find a 10,000 as the final race leading up to Mt Washington. I spoke with Steve Vaitones and he agreed to host a 10,000 if I could get 6 guys to enter. We’ll the race is now a definite event! 11:00AM at Regis College. If you are interested in racing on the track check out:
I’ve only run the 10,000 on the track nine times and haven’t done one in nearly 20 years (1992). I’m looking forward to taking a shot at my master’s PR (34:28 @ James Joyce) and tuning up for the main focus of my training (Mt Washington).

Track
After skipping a week on the track it was time to get back to it this week. My ankle is still a bit hinky but I'm not racing this weekend so it's probably a good idea to get out there and get some good leg turnover. I met up with Dan at his work and we ran over to Phillips Academy (a little over 2 miles) and met up with Craig Fram. We did our normal 1 mile warm-up on the track including a lap running the turns fast and a lap running the straights fast. Then into the workout which was 3 times 1,000 meters at 5km race pace. My goal was to hit each 400 as close to 80 seconds as possible (that comes out to 16:40 for 5km). We decided to each lead for the entire Kilometer rather than alternate the lead during each one. Dan set off on the first one and was very consistent hitting a very even pace for the 2.5 laps. We did a 600 (1.5 lap) rest. I took the lead on the second one but somehow messed up my watch and ended going out a bit too slowly (82 or so at 400), I picked up the pace over the last 600 and brought us in on schedule. The recovery went pretty quickly (we could do this on 400 rest, but that isn't the "plan") and Craig set off leading the final one. It seemed a little quick but nothing outrageous, Craig was also very consistent and evenly paced but a little bit quicker than goal pace. We finished up with an easy 1.5 laps and then ran back to Dan's work. All in all the workout went quite well. I felt pretty good although the thought of running 5 consecutive Kilometers at a slightly faster pace in less than a month seems a daunting task. A lot can happen in a month! :-)

6k USATF NE champs
USATF NE 6 kilometer championships
Could there be an odder distance than 6k? Why would anyone want to suffer through “the longest 5k you’ll ever run”? Will we have five masters finish the race? These were some of the thoughts I had before heading to the New England 6km championships in Nashua NH.
Robert the Hunkarian and Dan V joined me for the drive and we were among the early arrivers. We parked next to Dave K and the Whirlaway gang so that we could keep a close eye on them J I felt awful. I‘d picked up a nasty cough and just was not “feeling it” on the quickly warming morning. I hate hot weather and anything over 60 seems pretty hot to me. The warm-up out and back over the first 1.5 miles of the course was one of the highlights of the day. It was a lot of fun catching up with the guys and checking out what lay ahead. We had pretty much every healthy guy on the racing team out there (and a few who were not healthy).
I did another mile with some strides and was feeling tired already, these short races are not for me…I get really nervous and just don’t feel comfortable. Anyway, I found a perfect spot on the left-hand side of the road to line up and hit the second row behind RUN’s Joseph Koech. He’d be long gone after the first 2 seconds leaving plenty of space to navigate. I also chose that side of the course because after the first 30 seconds of the race we’d take a sharp right, so being on the left I could swing wide and not get into any trouble. It worked out well as I got out clean and never really had to worry about getting tripped up. Dan got out unusually fast but I could see some of the other guys I was keying off of and felt I was going at about the right pace. I hit the mile in 5:18 which was a few seconds slower than I’d hoped (based on my splits from 2008). Dan was three seconds up and I pushed as hard as I could to close the gap on him. At the top of the climb (about 1.6 miles) I caught Dan and Mark Reeder went by at the same time. I went with Mark and started working on closing on Mike Quintal (returning from injury).

I hit 2 miles in 10:45 (5:27) but I think the mile might have been marked wrong because that seemed too fast. I wasn’t thinking that during the race I was just thinking “go with these guys”. Mike was flying on the downhill parts and coming back on the flats and I knew there would be guys behind us waiting to kick by. I just don’t have a kick so I tried to work as hard as I could. We hit three in 16:16 (5:31?) which seemed slow for the mile with a fair amount of downhill. Mark gradually pulled ahead and I tried to stay with Mike. I didn’t have much left and couldn’t match Mike on the final uphill to the finish. I crossed the line in 20:17 and was totally spent.
We quickly gathered up a group and headed out to re-run the course as a warm-down. I had missed seeing my mom at the mile/2.7 mile (I figured it would be close but I probably missed her by about a minute) so I wanted to catch her coming in. The warm-down is always a great time with all of the pressure off and everyone chiming in on the good and the bad that happened during the race. We caught mom as she was approaching the final water stop and we all cheered her on. After looping the course I headed over and checked in with Steve V to make sure that all of the CMS guys were in the team results. Good news for the teams, the open squad took the win and our masters finished second a scant 9 seconds behind Whirlaway. I was very surprised to find that I’d finished 9th in the 40+. This is my 8th year as a master and before this race I’d only cracked the top 10 in a NE championship twice (a 9th at Bridge of Flowers in 2008 was the last time). This was definitely a pleasant surprise.
